You said 11 chapters and this is chapter 8 already!!! I am already facing the dread I feel when I am finishing a good book. I relish the closing action and yet mourn the fast approaching ending. I love the adventures of Spike and Buffy in a set up like this. A perfect partnership. You have a definite talent for spinning a good yarn while capturing the voices of the characters. The sex ain't bad either...**wink wink**

BTW if this is 8 pm at your time it's almost 11 pm at my time. You're right about your Spelunke, that's a dive. My on-line translation knew it :) But now to your new chapter :)
Oh good guess (because of that spitting fire part), a dragon? Buffy got one too when Glory opened the portal.
Buffy the Dragonslayer. Yeah, sounds good :)
Maybe the dragon is pissed off because it was take from his natural environment.
Buffy said Spike was being strange; he has to think ahead most of the time, think of loosing what he has with Buffy. No wonder he's not in his best mood.
Good thing is that Buffy has time to explore new sides on (of) Spike.
Finally when Jirun said that the dragon was there, appearing out of nowhere I was reminded of Pern's dragons; they jump from place to place not really flying.
Imaging my surprise when this dragon could talk too.
But they often do that in films/books.
Looking forward to more :)
Maybe Buffy doesn't have to 'slay' the dragon to save this world.
Author's Response: A major client showed up at work on what was supposed to be my half-day! I got home two hours late.
I was thinking of Tolkien's dragon in 'The Hobbit', but Pern must have been in the back of my head too. I've read a lot of McCaffrey!

Spike thinks already ahead, hmmm? a flicker of something shadowed and painful behind his eyes when Buffy said he was addictive.
*eep* And an assassination attempt. But what should they do? They don't know when that 'thing' will attack again. No wonder that Lehren has followers enough for an assassination.
Yeah, Spike knows that Buffy will end things when they go back. He definitely is not looking forward to it.

'Spelunke' is German for a dive, right? The kind of lowlife bar that's dangerous. And that word comes from the Latin word 'spelunca' for 'cave'. In the 1950s, the U.S. started used 'spelunking' to mean exploring dangerous caves. A friend of mine is a caver and told me where the word came from.
I'll be posting Chapter 8 around 2 pm on Monday. That would be about 8 pm in Germany, right? The weekend let me proof and post 2 chapters quicker than usual

By the way, Gunpowder wa invented in China about 3 millennia ago. By the time trains existed gunpowder was known throughout the world for at least a couple of decades. Just a trivial information. Arguabelly, trains could not be installed without it (had to have a way to blast away rock, didn't they?). Spike would have known this.
Author's Response: I know. And they were using cannon before the Renaissance. I was playing with a world that never discovered it, so that they would have no effective long range weapons. Such a world might have been forced to run their rails around or over rock, rather than through it. Just an experiment.

Leaving the light on... mainly for seeing Buffy, but a tiny tiny reason may have been for Spike that Buffy knew it was him, huh? And not Angel.
And so HOT :) I don't think that Buffy will go for anything normal after that, having experienced what it means to have an equal where she doesn't have to hold back. In this case Spike treats her with a partner too; with equal rights, not a 'baby' to protect.

Spike's protective, but not with that smothering protectiveness of Angel that takes away her choices. I wanted to show the difference between them.
