The Rain Came Down

Chapter 1

“Oh My God!” Buffy jumped out of her chair and threw her arms around Spike’s neck, “Yes! Yes! Yes! Oh my God, Oh my God!! Oh, oh do I get a ring?” She squealed, wiggling her ring finger in his face.

Spike looked at her…Fuck! He didn’t think of that, look at her face…think Spike think! He looked down at his hands the only ring he had was his skull ring with the ruby eyes. He sighed and pulled it from his finger.

“Sorry luv, I buggered this up, don’ have a ring, but will you wear this one, ’s my favorite, I promise I will get you a proper one.” He said as he placed it on her finger.

Buffy looked down at her ring, her eyes welling up with tears, He gave me his favorite…She looked up at him, his clear blue eyes searching hers for some indication that she would accept his meager offering, that she would not reject him. Tears spilled past her lashes and washed down her cheeks, and he knew he had ruined it.

He tore his eyes from hers and looked at the floor waiting for her rejection when he felt her small trembling hand under his chin pulling his eyes back to her face, and then he saw it, the most beautiful smile he had ever seen, her tears stained cheeks, glowing with radiance and joy. She was effulgent. Then she spoke, well he saw her mouth moving, but he was too lost to hear what she actually said.

“Spike? Spike?” He snapped his eye shut and shook his head clearing the fog that was now clouding his brain.

“Huh, what did you say Luv, kind of lost me there for a moment?”

Buffy placed her hands of either side of his face, and brought his lips to hers in the most gentle kiss he had ever known, brushing her lips lightly to his she said “I said that this ring is perfect, just perfect, and I love you, you big dufus!” She giggled and then claimed his mouth again.

And with that Spike was a man lost, his hands shot to her waist and hauled her against him as he sought entrance to her mouth. God she was so warm, he couldn’t contain himself, he deepened the kiss, his tongue dueling with hers, as her arms went around his neck and her body molded itself to his.

She could feel his arousal against her stomach, and she rubbed herself against him, her own body loosing its control over her desire, then they heard a loud coughing noise behind them and they broke apart both gasping.

Giles, shit I forgot about him.

Buffy twisted in Spikes arms, eliciting a grown from him when her bottom came in contact with his throbbing erection. “Giles!” She squealed, “We’re getting married, look!” as she waggled her finger in his face, “my ring, isn’t it wonderful?”

Giles took a shuttering breath, “Dear Lord!” And here I thought things couldn’t get any worse. “Buffy, I do believe this is a little rash, maybe you should think about this.” He said as he reached for her hand bringing it closet to his face so he could see, his eye sight was getting worse by the minute. “Is that a skull?”

“I know ’s not right for her, but I forgot about a ring, so I gave her mine. I’ll get her a proper ring, as soon as I can. I have been tied up here for weeks, so ’s not like I could get my dosh or to a shop.” Spike said as he nuzzled the slayers neck planting soft kisses along the side.

“But I don’t want a new ring, I like this one!” She pouted

“That lip, gonna get it!” He said as he spun her around and captured her lips again.

“Would you two stop that?” Giles shouted as he stumbled over to the sofa, spilling his scotch as he tripped on the throw rug. “This can not be happening!” He all but growled in frustration.

Buffy and Spike broke apart and Buffy turned to him “Giles, are you okay?”

“No! I most certainly am not! Oh Lord, I do believe I am now blind.” He said with a defeated sigh.

“Blind?” Buffy asked rushing to her watcher’s side. “When did this happen?” Helping him to sit on the sofa, placing his tumbler of scotch on the table and then sitting beside him holding his hand.

“It started this morning, I went to Willow’s to get the ingredients for the spell we were going to do on Spike, and my eyesight got blurry. It has been getting worse all day, and now nothing just blackness.” He explained as he rubbed his eyes with his free hand.

“Did you notice anything today, honey?” She asked as she looked up at her fiancé.

“Oi! Don’ look at me! I didn’ do it.” He said as he threw his hands up in the air in mock surrender. “Knew somethin’ was off, ‘cause he left the key to the chains right next to me. That’s how I escaped. Didn’ rightly know he’d go all Ray Charles.” Spike explained.

“Giles, did anything else happen today, or last night? A demon attack or any other weirdness?” Concern etched on her face as she looked at her surrogate father, then turning her questioning eyes to Spike

“I don’t recall anything odd, or weirdness as you say.” He sighed and laid his head back against the back of the sofa and closed his useless eyes.

“Me neither.” Spiked shrugged. “Could be a hex or spell, you piss anyone or anything off lately watcher?”

“Not that I am aware of.” Giles stated as he lifted his head upright again. Then he started to stand excited “But if it is a spell or hex as you say, a simple reversal spell should do the trick. I just need to research!”

Buffy grabbed his arm and pulled him back down onto the sofa, “but Giles, you can’t see the books, so how are you going to research.”
“No worries watcher, I look for the spell, while Buffy gets you another drink.” Spike said as winked at Buffy and strode over to the bookcases.

“Awe, isn’t he just the bentest fiancé?” She said as she jumped up and joined Spike at the books, pulling him down for a kiss, which quickly took on a life of it’s own. Spike closed the book he had open and pulled Buffy against him. She jumped into his arms wrapping her legs around his waist rubbing her drenched center against his bulging erection. Spike then pinned her between him and the bookcase pumping his hips to gain more friction when disgusted watcher shouting loudly interrupted their efforts…

“I can still hear you!”

Chapter 2

An embarrassed Buffy disengaged herself from Spike, her face turning the most remarkable shade of red he had ever seen. She buried her flaming cheeks against Spikes chest her hands gripping his tight black t-shirt. Then he felt her begin to tremble, just slightly at first then full on trembling. He held her tighter to his chest “Buffy, Love what is it?” he whispered quietly as the continued holding her to him supporting her, as she could no longer support herself. “Come on baby, tell me. Please Love, you’re scaring me.” He released her with one arm using his other to try and coax her to look at him, brushing her hair away from her face, and ducking his head so that he was looking into her tear filled eyes.

Buffy finally met his eyes, and there was so much tenderness, love and confusion in them. And they were so blue, had they always been this blue, she thought. She took a couple of deep calming breaths trying to think of what to say that would explain her behavior. She broke her eyes away from his inquiring gaze and stared at her hands gripping his shirt at his chest.

Just what exactly had come over her? One minute she was all over him, couldn’t get close enough to him, and the next she was trembling and crying like a frightened child. That’s it! She was frightened, well not just frightened, terrified was more like it. Relationships and Buffy, were, are bad! Full of hurt, and well just plain badness. So many questions flowed through her mind, will he laugh at me, will he understand, will he leave me or rather when will he leave me, they always leave because I’m not good enough, never good enough for them to stay.

His whisper broke her out of her thoughts, “Buffy? Please, what is it? I‘m right here, baby. What’s got you so rattled? Please, talk to me.”

“Spike,” She croaked out, tears spilling oven and running down her cheeks, she tried to continue“I’m..I’m ..I can’t …not good… sorry…you won’t…then I won’t...” Then she buried he face in his chest again and came apart, completely apart as great sobs racked her body, and if Spike hadn’t been holding her up she would have crumpled to the floor.

Spike gently picked her up in his arms, trying to soothe her. “Buffy, it’s okay, I’ve got you.” He glanced over to the couch to see the concerned eyes of her watcher searching blindly for her.

Giles began to rise off the couch reaching out with his arms to try to get to his distressed slayer, “Buffy? Spike, what have you done? Where is she?” He stumbled forward catching his foot on the leg of the coffee table nearly crashing to the floor.

“Sit back down watcher. I’ve got her, an’ I. Didn’. Do. Anything! Jus’ give me a minute will you to calm her will ya!”

Spike made his way over to the recliner across from Giles, as the watcher again took his seat on the couch. Spike held the still sobbing slayer to his chest as he sat down trying to find some way to calm and comfort her, but no amount of shushing or tender words seem to work, she just continued to sob and clutch at him.

The last time Spike had seen anyone this distraught had been over one hundred and forty years, back when he was human, and he had tried to comfort his mother after his little sister had died from the influenza. He felt just as helpless now as he did then. But is seemed his demon knew what to do as a low rumbling purr erupted from his chest and immediately Buffy started to calm, the great gulping sobs ebbed to quite whimpers and sniffles. Eventually her breathing evened out and Spike realized she had slipped into an exhausted sleep.

Giles had been quietly sitting on the couch, his useless eyes searching out in the general direction of where he knew Spike was intently listening to Spike trying to calm his slayer, and silently begging the powers to restore his sight so he could see what was happening. He had heard Spike’s tender words give way to the sounds that suspiciously sounded like purring now coming from the vampire. He heard her quiet down and decided to risk calling to her, he leaned forward scooting to her edge of the couch preparing to rise and try again to reach his troubled slayer, “Buffy?”

“Watcher” Spike growled softly but alarming authority, and Giles stilled. “She’s asleep,” he continued growling as he spoke as to not interrupt his demon’s calming effect on the now calmed girl. “When she wakes we’ll get this sorted, yeh?”

“Fine Spike, but you and I will be having a conversation about this!” Giles whispered with quiet authority knowing that Spike’s vampire hearing would catch what he said, but not loud enough to wake the now peaceful Buffy.

Spike nodded toward the watcher, even though he knew he couldn’t see him and then looked down at the sleeping girl in his arms. She looked so peaceful, one hand curled under her chin and the other flat against his chest as if even in her sleep she was still seeking the comfort of his rumbling purrs and reassurance of his presence. He lowered his head resting his cheek against the top of her head inhaling her scent closing his own eyes in bliss. This is it he thought, this is where I belong, here with her in my arms, her scent surrounding me. The man and demon were in complete agreement, which surprised him. He would have thought his demon would rejoice in the slayer’s distress, but it hadn’t. In fact it was the demon, not the man, that was able to comfort her. He knew that the watcher would be pressing him for an explanation later, he only wondered if he would have one, even for himself.

*Sorry the update took so long. Major surgery and real life have been a bit overwhelming...and it is taking me a lot longer to get the thoughts down and out the way I intend! So I don't know how long it will be between updates, but I will try not to be this long again. Please tell me what you think. Thanks.

Author's Notes:
I am so sorry this took so long to update, and I didn't really get to where I was going with this chapter, but decided to post what I have. Real life has really kicked by butt. Caught my husband of 17 years having an affair, and have fled with my children to the loving arms of my family back home. We are devastated and are trying to get back to some kind of normalcy. So I don't know how soon I will be able to update as my muse has fled also, I hope she returns soon, as I really am committed to this story and really want to finish it. Thank you all for reading and reviewing as I can use all the support I can get.
Chapter 3

Contemplation

Giles was in desperate need for a drink so he gingerly reached out to the coffee table he knew was somewhere close in front of him for his glass and his favorite scotch. He quickly found them and slowly and carefully pored some in the glass keeping his finger just inside the rim so he could stop when he felt the liquid as to not over fill and make a mess he could not see to clean up. Once satisfied that he had adequately filled his tumbler, he brought the bottle with him propping in between his leg and the arm of the couch, he wanted it within easy reach so he could quick access for refills, of which there would be many he was sure. He was at a complete loss. Here he was blind, his slayer had had a meltdown, and one of the most evil vile creatures on earth was comforting her and was obviously content in doing so.

He continued to refill his glass as he tried to make sense of what had happened to Buffy and Spike’s reaction. At first when he had heard her sobbing he just knew Spike had been the cause, and then he heard the evil vampire’s gentle words and the pleading desperate tone, and he could tell that Spike was just confused at to the cause of her emotional collapse. And then Spike had begun making those sounds, low growls and then purring, at least is sounded like purring, and almost immediately Buffy had begun to calm, and Giles wanted to know what that was all about. Was it some sort of thrall? Oh, yes Spike was definitely going to have to answer for this.

As he sat contemplating this strange occurrence he noticed that the “purring” sound had become quieter. He could still hear it but it was certainly less pronounced. Bloody Hell! If only I could see, he thought as he refilled his glass with the last of the scotch, “My that went quickly.” He whispered as he leaned forward to place the empty bottle next to sofa on the floor, and feeling a bit woozy, feeling the effects of the half a bottle he had consumed, he turned and brought his feet rest on the sofa in front of him leaning back into the corner at the one end facing toward the recliner Spike and the sleeping Buffy were occupying. Within minutes he was also sleeping.

Spike was still absorbing the scent of his slayer when he opened his eyes upon hearing the watcher move about. He watched as Giles gained possession of his scotch and poured a glass. He could almost see the wheels turning in the man’s head as he sat back of the sofa. Spike was not oblivious to the irony that he was now sitting here holding the slayer in his arms watching the watcher. It was amusing to watch him too. The look of confusion on the watcher’s face, he imagined mirrored his own. Spike didn’t understand what had happened anymore that the watcher did. One minute he was snogging the slayer and the next he was comforting her. And why was he comforting her? He seemed to remember earlier in the day all he had wanted to do was drain her dry, and the next minute they were getting married, in love and snogging. How had he fallen so quickly? Sure he thought her to be right beautiful and feisty. Always, up for a good fight, but now he was totally and completely in love with her, of that he was sure. The man could feel it, and if there was anything William knew it was love, and the demon knew it too. How else would he explain the desire to comfort her and the purring?

The last time he remembered purring was over a hundred years ago, when he was first turned and fancied himself in love with Dru. He remembered that he would always purr after making love to his dark princess, that was until the day he found her shagging Angelus. After that day the demon no longer found contentment with Dru, and never purred again. Oh he still loved her, as much as he had ever loved any woman, but her betrayal had cut the man and the demon too deep.

Spike continued to watch Giles for a short time, but after surmising that the watcher was content to ponder and drink his scotch, he closed his eyes and joined his girl in sleep.

At some point after Spike had drifted off to sleep, as he was awakened by the subtle stirrings of Buffy on his lap. He lazily opened his eyes and looked down at the still slumbering girl, though he could tell she would awake shortly by the change in her breathing and movement. He glanced at the watcher who’s head was propped up against the corner of the couch with his mouth hanging open and assumed that he had succumbed to the bottle and fallen asleep also, and judging by now empty bottle of scotch now on the floor it seemed to be a correct assumption. He glanced at the clock on the wall and was surprised to find it was past eight. Buffy had been sleeping in his arms for more than two hours. And he couldn’t have been happier, even though he was getting a bit stiff.

As Buffy drifted towards wakefulness she could feel her comfy pillow rumbling, and felt oddly calm. She could feel strong arms wrapped around her, and all she knew was she had never felt so loved and safe in her life. She snuggled her face against someone’s neck, and took in the smell of leather and tobacco. She knew instantly it was Spike. 'I’d know that smell anywhere.' But why was she in Spike’s arms, and why was he purring? Then it came back to her. The proposal, they were getting married; a smile stole over her face. The kissing, the fantastic kissing, the phenomenal kissing, the kissing that made you forget everything in the world but those lips! Buffy licked her lips just thinking about those kisses. Then how did she end up asleep? ' Oh my God! I went to pieces. He must think I am a total basket case. I blew it. Now I know he will run from crazy Buffy the first chance he gets.' She started to take gulping breaths, and the panic began to take her over again, but the rumbling got louder and she heard his soothing voice.

Spike had sat quietly as he felt Buffy become aware of her, and him. Enjoying her snuggling against him. He was terrified to speak. Afraid to break the peacefulness that had enveloped her, but then he felt her tense and could tell by her breathing that the panic from earlier was beginning to set in again.

“Buffy, Love, your okay. Spike’s got you. Just stay calm. Your safe here Love.” He whispered, turning to kiss her forehead, all the while increasing his purring to try and keep his girl calm. If she couldn’t remain calm, he couldn’t find out what was troubling her or how to fix it.

Buffy calmed at his words, taking slow long deep breaths. Soon she was calm enough to sit up a bit. She felt a hand under her chin raising her face to his. She was profoundly embarrassed and kept her eyes cast downward to avoid seeing the disappointment she was sure that would reside in his eyes.

Spike dipped his head trying to make eye contact with the now profusely blushing girl. Finally, she looked up, and what she saw surprised her. There was no disappointment in those eyes, only love and concern. Her own eyes filled with tears again, tears of shame and embarrassment.

“Now, now Pet, none o’ tha’.”

Buffy brought her hands to cover her face, “I’m sorry. I’m so embarrassed.”
Spike took her hands in his and pulled them from her face, forcing her to look at him again whispering to her, “Shush, now. No need to feel like tha’. Sometimes we all need tendin’ to. I love you Buffy. Never feel embarrassed to show me how you feel, to show me your vulnerability. You can trust me with it Buffy.”

With that she smiled and leaned forward to place her head in the crook of his neck “Thank you.”
