I had to re-read that 'tootsie roll pop' line a couple times before the light clicked on in my head. Clever me! Reading Kaede's reaction to seeing her vamp husband made my heart hurt. A little fun, a little angst, and you've got one great chapter!

Author's Response: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a sword box? (Apparently one if you're the slayer.) ;-) Ahem. Sorry... As for the angst factor, strangely enough it's Chapter 9 that really gets to me. That one will be going up soon. Thanks for the review!

Great chapter! I wonder what's going through Spike's head??

Author's Response: Probably things that would make me have to up the rating for this story if I wrote them. ;-) Thanks for the review!

(BTW I think now the childe was human.) *sigh* I'm so sorry for Kaede and Takeshi. *sigh* Must have been heartbreaking for Kaede. And Takeshi too because I think he too still loves Kaede. ~ *grins* Buffy's story had Giles in Watcher's mood again ;-) And Buffy reacts more Kaede like.. at last a bit :) The amulet of Amaterasu? Looking forward to the next part.

Author's Response: I think both Buffy and Spike could profit from a little Kaede and Takeshi -ish behavior, sans the post-turning angst of course. Thanks for the review!

whee! An update! So what exactly is that amulet? And very interesting how Bufffy's got all of kaede's memories and so that means Spike has all of his counterparts? Gah, you're killing me here. . . I can't wait for these updates

Author's Response: So of course I disappear for a few days... (Sorry!) I'm glad you're liking this fic so much. Thanks for the review!

*sigh* Poor Takeshi. He can be glad the his training aloud him to hold the demon in check. If his wife would have caught him feeding she would have killed her. So he was a very very young vamp, only two days old. I don't have the time to count now how old he was till he died (dusted). Seems as if Ai/Kieko did give Takeshi his soul back. I wonder if Ai/Kieko knew what would happen (great costs) but I think she did because she asked Takeshi to send Kaede to her. ~ *gg* It took Takeshi a bit of convincing Spike to accept :) Good luck? They'll sure can use it.

Author's Response: I'll explain the soul situation in a little bit, I promise. As for Ai, I would imagine that she did know Takeshi's fate. She's creepy like that. ;-) Thanks for the review!

Spike and his woman troubles! =) I must say that I'm just as caught up in the Takeshi/Kaede story line as the Spike/Buffy one! It's great to see the two storylines converge.

Author's Response: I'm glad people seem to be liking both time lines. I was kind of worried people would skim through the Japanese section to get to the Spuffy (call it a lack of faith as to my ability to make a whole suite of interesting OCs), which would kind of defeat the purpose of the entire story. Thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case. Thanks for the review!

I love your story and I found myself reading these chapters one after the other.
I have one big question though, but I'm not sure if you can answer me now: Kaede was pregnant of the man or the vampire?

Author's Response: I promise that it'll become obvious in the next few chapters. I tend to be stingy with my spoilers. ;-) Thanks for the review!

*Gulps* So now, I presume Spike has just received Takeshi's memories? Of things specifically relating to the battle against Orochi and how to defeat him - so whatever it was that Ai/Kieko passed to him? Or was this transfer something different and will those memories include his and Kaede's ill fated love? *bittersweet sigh*

The scene with Ai/Kieko was reminiscent of the old Watermargin series I used to watch avidly when I was a girl... but that used to be the evil spirits who were always using a beautiful maiden as their vessel
to fool the good guys. Here, Ai is different, I know, but it's that etheral monochromatic imagery you invoke, and inot it you place a flash of scarlet and white. Powerfully suggestive.

And I love the fact that Takeshi retained parts of the man and was able to master his demon for his love. Ho sad that Kaede's training was strong enough for her to close her heart and home to him because of that. Watchers have so much to answer for... I hope Giles Ripperman suit chaffes occasionally!

I like this update very much. Thank you again

Small typo, methinks, I am surprised you could control the hunger for as long as you have. No go! should probably read, "... now go!"

Author's Response: I promise you'll find out what both of their memory transfers entailed. As for spandex chaffage, I'm not sure if I can help you out with that one, at least not in this story. ;-) Thanks for the review (and the mad typo-finding skills)!

I think this is my favorite chapter so far. Takeshi really impressed me, being a mere fledging and resisting to kill humans *and* help the slayer. I hadn't expected that he and Keade were married before he was a vampire.

And the scene were Spike met takeshi, *lol* soo funny when Spike realizes Buffy's his consort!

"Well, it was unnatural. It was unthinkable. It was perverse. It was right up his alley." This made me laugh, that's just sooo true! *lol*

Your story just keeps getting better!
~Nina

Author's Response: Yeah, Spike really had no room to throw stones as far as "bleeding tragic taste" goes. Thanks for the review!

I am breaking my orders for this story, since I'm supposed to be resting and icing my arm. This is fascinating. . . I love how you are weaving the two stories together and creating a third by linking the main characters of each. Lyrical and lovely and full of knowledge of Japanese myth and belief. . . . I am so looking forward to reading the rest of this story.

Author's Response: Yikes! I hope your arm's doing better. I'm glad you're liking the story so much. Thanks for the review!

Poor Spike! One thing I like about season 4 is Spike not consciously mooning over Buffy; but I think you handled the transition well. He doesn't seem that surprised!

I love Takeshi. Great character-- will we get to see how he is vamped?

Author's Response: That transition is always a scary thing to handle, because I hate plots that seem forced. And yes, you'll get to see Takeshi getting vamped, even though the blatent abuse of my own characters really started getting to me in the next few chapters. Thanks for the review!

So much to love. Takeshi's struggles and his despair at not being able to speak with Kaede are very poignant. And I love the confrontation between Spike and Takeshi. Funny in parts, and also moving. Poor Spike. He really hasn't had a brother, or any kind of equal, since he was turned (and perhaps before). Despite his discomfort at the thought of Buffy as his consort, it seems clear to me that your (and Mutant Enemy's) Spike longs for true connection and comradeship. He was a lonely man, and he is a lonely vampire.

Author's Response: At least Xander can blame his bug eatting and weird disease catching on spells. Spike just has the unfortunate habit of playing Fate's whipping boy. I'll see what I can do about our boy's isolation, deal? Thanks for the review!

love this tale and how in japan the story is told backwards, a la "memento" ;) hope you update soon!! thanx

Author's Response: I guess I really need to go watch Memento, because you're the second person who has compared it to this story. I'm told the movie was very good, so I'll take this as a complement and be happy. Thanks for the review!

I am as enthralled with the Japanese slayer's story as I am with Buffy and Spike's. . . . It is nice to see that something of Kaede and her husband lived on -- it gives hope for the other two -- and perhaps, just perhaps,, well, i'm getting ahead of myself. your knowledge of Japanese practices shines through, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of this

Author's Response: I'm just glad I haven't put my foot in it yet as far as the Japanese culture part of the story goes. I'm glad you're liking the historic part of the story as well as the Spuffy. Thanks for the review!

Cool, I was hoping that the two slayers and the two vampires would meet. I always look forward to reading another one of your chapters. I was reading some of the other reviews, and I noticed how many readers followed you from your last story, so I read it and loved it! If it is possible for you to make a sequel, I would love to read it. I really liked the friendship between Spike, Tara, and Dawn (and Meret!), it is difficult to find alternate season six stories that seem believeable, but yours is my favourite.

Author's Response: I'm brainstorming on a sequel for Serpents, so we'll see where that falls out. I'm glad you're liking the two stories. Thanks for reviewing!

I had to walk away from the screen for a minute after reading the historical section of this chapter. in order to allow the chills to subside.

>>I am coming Takeshi.

Her eyes rose unconsciously to the stars, wanting to witness their beauty one last time before death took her. In the corner of her eye, Kaede saw Orochi’s head start its inexorable dive. She closed her eyes and hope that the pain would not last very long.

It was then that she heard the battle cry.>>

Exquisite.

The rest of the chapter is wonderful, too. I love the history in the story, and in your author's responses.

Author's Response: I'm too much of a history-buff to not get into the historic part of this story, both within the fic and in my responses to feedback. I'm glad it's not driving people nuts. I have been a little surprised that most of the comments have dealt with the Kaede/Takeshi time line because this is a Spuffy site, but I'm definitely not complaining. I love my OCs too and I'm glad others seem to like them as well. Thanks for the review!

And the plot thickens... I'm loving it. Buffy finally met Kaede and she blaims Willow for getting Spike as her 'consort' *lol* that was funny. I like how she felt a bond to Kaede, as sisters cos of their slayerhood. Again your descriptions of the surroundings in the flahbacks are amazing. It really feels like you're there. Not sure if I'm making any sense, but what I am trying to say: overall, another great chapter!

Author's Response: I'm flattered by the sense you're making. Thanks!

Again, the Kyoto imagery is very monochromatic and etheral, and again I'll say... hauntingly beautiful. Knowing that it's that setting that holds the angst in this story just makes it so much more bittersweet and inviting.

Your imagery of Kaede is very clever too. A vision of delicate grace wrapped around a strength of steel and harbouring the self confidence of a great war general. It's very interesting now to draw sociological comparisons between the two slayers. One born into a society where tradition, honour and female subjugation are paramount and the other, a 21st century gal full of liberation, sass and willfulness. Both finding their way despite...

Orochi has me in two minds. One part of me wants to laugh out loud at the imagery created in my head. In my head, Oroch has the lower body of the monster from the deep from an old black and white B-Movie, the body of Jabba the Hutt's bigger brother and eight Medusaesque heads all with wild mesmerising eyes and wild flailing hair. *bows head in embarrassment*. The other part of me though, feels the malevolence and indestructability that is the downfall of all who encounter him and I feel helpless for Kaede.

The current day events are, as I'd expect at this stage of the story and as I think you intended anyway, pretty predictable. But, it's still fun to follow Buffy and Spike as their realisation grows! Transporting Buffy to this ethereal world so that there is a meeting of Slayers and Vampires is a great idea, and I'm so looking forward to checking out how each pair react to each other and to what they learn there!

Two things I noticed (tell me you don't need me to do this and I'll stop, honest):

fixing he watcher with an angry glare. should read, 'fixing her watcher with an angry glare'.

The other thing is really me being picky with grammar. The sentence, She watched Giles untie their vampiric prisoner with an impassive face. reads as though it'd Spike's impassive face. I think it should read, 'She watched Giles, his face impassive, as he untied their vampiric prisoner'. (not sure I'd used the vampiric adjective there either?).

Such powerful imagery in this chapter. It's clear you love the setting. Thanks again for another lovely chapter. Don't suppose there's going to be a clip of 'Ripperman' meeting 'Ichiro-san', too, is there? *winks*

Author's Response: Well, I can claim no responsibility for Orochi's design. That I got from the myths. ;-) I'm glad you're liking the settings though, because they're so much fun to write. As for freelance betaing, I totally welcome it. It's good for the fic and my ego. (Oh, but if you keep bringing up Ripperman, I might have to abandon this story in favor of writing crack!fic. Fair warning.) Thanks for leaving a review!

And I'm thankful for the happy ending clause :) ~ I like Kaede. Seems to me she is a bit like Buffy. Independent I mean when it comes to her fighting (He gave her orders and was so confident that she would obey them that he never even noticed her fighting her own way, learning strategy and implementing her own plans.). Seems as if Kaede is used to fight together with Takeshi. When he was human? We'll see.. ~ Seems Willow 'got' Buffy with a 'sacred duty' speech. Uh-huh.. Buffy meet Kaede :) Loved that part, Buffy denying to feel something for Spike, Kaede knowing more. I wonder what happened to Spike: Did he meet Takeshi? Could be possible. Thanks for the update; loved it :) And hope for more soon.

Author's Response: I aim to please. ;-) I'll be hitting your questions in future chapters, I promise. Thanks for reviewing!
