Great chapter, but then yours always are ;)
The realtionship between Keade and takeshi seems like a really good one, they seem to care about each other a lot. The scene with them in the dojo made me smile, it was really nice. But as for Ichiro? Is it okay if I hate him? *lol* well *dislike* him? This really shows how lucky Buffy was to get Giles as a watcher.
Anyway, good job weywolfen! Now, I've got a couple of chapters to catch up with, so you won't ged rid of me yet! *lol*

Author's Response: Oh, please do hate Ichiro. I do and I made him. If I can get a visceral reaction out of you guys, I'll feel like I might be doing alright with this whole writing thing. Thanks for the review!

Kaede felt older? I think Buffy felt this way too. Being a slayer does this to you. Awe, these extraordinary swords were a wedding gift ~ So at last Buffy knows now how it is to be loved dearly, give childbirth... even if it is only secondhand it is as if she had lived it. So at last she knows even when she'll probably never have a child of her own (as the slayer). She would learn from the past. Good decision. :) Looking forward to read the next chapter!

Author's Response: And there you just found the moral of the whole story. ;-) Thanks for the review!

Early Willow was a delightful girl, before the pity party started to creep in.

I'm guessing Spike has been doing a lot of thinking, going over Takeshi's information in his head. It's the only thing that really gets him silent. But he's not brooding. Nope, never even close. *hee*

Awww, Buffy can't be little miss denial girl anymore....Yay!!!

On to the Initiative!

Author's Response: Season 4 was a great time for the group's dynamics. I actually knew the outline for the swords and the Japanese story long before I decided on the season or how I would tie Orochi back into the present. In the end I had to run with this one though, because it just seemed to fit in the best. (And brooding? Perish the thought!) Thanks for the review!

I've been away too long! I just read your last three chapters and am kicking myself that I didn't get here sooner. The Kaede/Takeshi storyline is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I like how you're giving us just enough to hint at the 'Japanese Romeo and Juliet' relationship carrying over to Buffy and Spike. As always, well done!

Author's Response: That was the whole idea. At this point in the game, I guess it's not very spoilery to say that even though I also want them to be their own characters, I'm also using Kaede and Takeshi as a mirror. Think of it this way. How would their relationship have turned out if his siring had been a non-issue? Just some food for thought. ;-) Thanks for reviewing!

Excellent chapter.

Oh, one question though. Are we ever going to find out what happened to Kaede after the whole battle? Just curious. =)

Author's Response: Yes, and no, and I'm not telling more. ;-) Wouldn't want to give away the end, now would I? Thanks for the review!

Two words... Laundry..... paralegal. What a picture you conjure, Weyr... absobloominlutely hysterical!

And, how you jumped to that from the intense scenes in Edo with Takeshi and Kaede, I know not... I'm assuming (and I know nothing of an authors writing process) that you must plot out the Japanese backstory as a single story in itself and likewise write the Sunnydale tale... then blend them together with little side-steps like the patrol. Phew. You're right, very intricate and must be hard to pick up all of the threads. So pleased to be the reader and not the writer.

It's interesting to see a slayer and her husband interact together so caringly... and for the slayer to welcome her partner into her world. It's hard to challenge protocol and, for them especially, in a very traditionally rigid culture their behaviours have to satisfy so many expectations.

For the Sunnydale pair, it's almost the opposite, if we discount the archaic Council of Wa***ers, because they are trying to find their common ground with virtually no 20th Century protocols.

So clever. Love it. *grins*

Author's Response: I don't know if this makes me more or less crazy, but I wrote the chapter sections simultaniously, with only the vaguest of outlines, in order to preserve the parallel construction. I wanted to write them together so that I could make sure that the mirroring aspects of the stories could be accentuated as the chapters progressed. Wah, brain cramp. And Chloe? I honestly can't say where she came from. I just love inserting the mundane aspects of demonic life into stories. It makes everything seem more real to me. Thanks fot the review!

“Well, what is your point then?”

“I don’t know!”

LOL, that was just too funny.....mans gotta right to be pissed I say :)

Author's Response: I would be ranting and fist-waving if I was in his position, that's for sure. :-D Thanks for the review!

Loved the chapter! It was great to read Buffy and Spike's banter too!

Author's Response: Snark is fun to write as well. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for reviewing!

Ooooh, more good stuff. Loved the addition of Chloe's laundry. Buffy was so ignorant to the demon world. Even Angel knows better, and he's almost as quick to kill before asking questions as she is..LOL

Ah, another Slayer who got the handbook. Poor Buffy...

Author's Response: I love obsessing about the little details of the demonic world like how they do their laundry, and whether or not vampires have to shave, and what exactly a frightened human smells like. Strange? Probably, but that's one of the big things that makes writing fun for me. I'm glad my nutty bird-walking is entertaining to people other than me. Thanks for the review!

Continuing to really enjoy this!

"“It’s not like I do background checks on potential boyfriends. Plus? I don’t think he would have put ‘secret agent man’ on a resume if I had asked for one.”

“That’s not the point.”

“Well, what is your point then?”

“I don’t know!”

“Oh thank God.”

“What?!”

“Vampires.”"

Love this exchange; very much in character for our heroes at this point. I'm a fan of the snark, and season four brought the snark at it's best.

You're reallly breaking my heart here with Takashi and Kadae; knowing the outcome makes it so much hearder to watch! Really masterful storytelling. When the story's done I'm going to have to re-read the whole thing in one go...

Author's Response: When I'm done, I've been thinking about going back and reading the whole thing backwards, just to see. I'm glad you're liking the snark. It's certainly fun to write. Thanks for the review!

So Takeshi wanted to know more about vampires! I thought it was about fighting.. yet in a way it is, huh? ~ Hehe.. Buffy's face when Spike told her that the rinjal demon named Chloe did the laundry and was a paralegal :) And me too :) (I would have loved to know what Buffy intended to say. Sure not allies :)

Author's Response: "Know your enemy." ;-) I might be hinting at Buffy's thoughts in the next chapter. Maybe. Thanks for the review!

Love the laundress demon!

Another wonderful chapter. My heart hurts for Kaede and Takeshi.

Author's Response: I have this perverse desire to write Chloe into another story. She was an off the cuff idea and now I love her. Thanks for the review!

That question definitely should have been asked in canon. I always thought of Riley as a nice guy, but not the right guy. And Buffy did care about him, but he was really just her attempt at the normal guy that Angel told her to find.

She was so afraid to think for herself, and that didn't really improve even to the end of the series. I always admired Spike for aking up his own mind and his own choices. None of the rest of them did.

My BF said he has read the book, but not in a long time. He's been thinking about picking that one up again, and The Art of War.

The note Kaede found was the message from Sano, right?

Author's Response: Sun Tzu and Musashi are both worth picking up every couple of years. It's interesting what you get out of them when you read them from different points in your life. Thanks to Angel, Buffy did become an emotional coward in the show. I agree that one of Spike's more admirable traits was his ability to take the kind of emotional hits that would break a normal person, but he just picked himself up and kept going. And yes, the letter is the same one from two chapters ago. Thanks for the review!

>>Willow’s face turned serious. “Buffy, can I ask you something?”

“Fire away.”

“Are you crying over Riley, or are you crying over the idea of Riley?”>>

A question that should have been asked in canon.

And, yes, this chapter is very sad. The love story of Kaede and Takeshi is truly heartbreaking.

Author's Response: Hearing that in canon would have certainly opened up some interesting avenues, but I guess it causes more long-term drama if everyone remains happily ensconced in the land of denial. Thanks for the review!

I wonder just how many Watchers have been responsible for the (premature) demise of their Slayer's? Ichiro is infuriatingly unfeeling and disrespectful, both toward Kaede and and Takeshi. I have nagging, and growing, suspicion that he...............
*nope, Chrissie, don't go there, wait awhile*

The two timelines again compliment each other beautifully. Both sets of Slayers and Vamps faced with frustrations that the others' have faced or will face. It's very intricate, isn't it, because you have one timeline moving backwards and the other moving forwards so their experiences don't so much mirror each other as represent past anf future tribulations. The great sadness is that, despite centuries of time and worlds of cultural and sociological change similar prejudices and barriers still exist.

This is a very thoughtful story, and this chapter has prompted me into some quiet reflection.

Lovely update, pet.

Author's Response: I wanted Ichiro to stand in for everything that is wrong with the Watcher's Council, even up to the modern day. As for the timelines, I'm just hoping that I don't bungle any of my threads along the way, because this story did become fairly complex when I decided to make the historic plot run backwards. Writing this story certainly made me think, am I think it's one of the highest complements reviewers can pay a writer to say that it did the same for them. Thank you!

I just realized I never mentioned this... I think it is really intriguing how, not only do you have two story lines going at once, but you have them going in reverse directions; one forward in time, one backward. It's really very cool! I love read this story. Keep up the good work! =)

Author's Response: Thanks! The reverse timeline is sometimes a headache, but it's fun to write too. I'm glad you're liking it.

Some self insight from Buffy-- that's a good sign! I never hated Riley (Yeah I know, I'm just about the only one!) but I always thought his appeal for Buffy was more "Not Angel" than "Riley" if that makes sense.

I love what you're doing with Kaede. Fascinating portait of a very different culture. I was wondering how "Girl power" would fit into such a male dominated world Really enjoying this!

Author's Response: That makes perfect sense. I never hated him either, and he filled his purpose well: the rebound guy that was everything Buffy's friends wanted for her. But there are some things that you just have to do for yourself (*cough cough* Takeshi *cough* Spike *cough*). :-D I'm glad you're liking Kaede's story too. Accurately portraying another culture was kind of intimidating, but fun too. Thanks for the review!

...rrrringgg...rrrriinnnggg... Clue phone for Miss Buffy Summers! And it seems like she's actually gonna answer it and LISTEN! Probably redundant of me to say this, but I'm lovin' every minute of it, baby!
