Wheeee! So glad to see a new update on this fic!
I actually really liked the last scene, where Buffy thinks that she can't stand the thought of seeing Spike's headstone while patrolling. It makes me think about what really happned in S6, and how Spike must have felt seeing Buffy's grave when he patrolled.
I'm enjoying so much how your 'verse is developing - sometimes with things being very different than the show, and other times with them being very much the same.
Author's Response: I've always wanted to see Spike's reaction to Buffy's headstone -- and got to, in Ameeya's wonderful "The Headstone", also on this archive -- and thought that Buffy, while strong, would actually feel roughly the same way. I'm glad you're enjoying this story!

Well, I've read quite a few pieces, but no one with Spike closing the portal. So, for what it's worth, it's new to me to, and I am enjoying it. Love that heartfelt crypt discussion. Love their babysteps.

Lovely and moving. Your Buffy and Dawn are so excellent.
One tiny suggestion: a little stuttering goes a long way in fiction. Having Tara stutter in almost every sentence is a little distracting.
Other than that, though, this story is excellent. You really are taking a basic concept done before (Spike sacrifices himself to save Buffy and Dawn) and making it completely original. I don't know where you are going with this, but I'm happily along for the ride.
Author's Response: Honestly, I was torn about the stuttering. I knew it was overkill when I wrote it, but I felt it was overkill in the show, as well. So it got to the point of how close to canon I wanted to be. In retrospect, I should have toned it down. Other than that, I'm glad you're enjoying the story!

Fantastic. You write the angst and the slow changes in Buffy's and Dawn's demeanour very well and above all believably. I think i would have preferred this version to what actually happened in the show. The writers never did give Spike enough credit.
So, keep up the good work and I will swing back when you update.

I've done it. Over on ffnet, but it is on hiatus at the moment and how you arrive at the point of Spike taking over is completely different. Cool story and am going on to the next chapter.

I'm glad Buffy could make Dawn understand that Spike didn't want to hurt her. At last I hope she did understand.
And the reactions of the Scoobies, I think they were typical. Xander couldn't should his mouth.
Buffy and Dawn deal with Spike's absence in their own way.
