I was shocked but not terribly sad when Giles killed Angel but this chapter actually made me mourn his loss. You were able to really portray Buffy's loss in a sensitive way that made it approachable and real to me as a reader. I was able to see his lost chance at redemption.
And what is up with the end of this chapter?! Xander was ready to break up with Willow and now their engaged? Something a little fishy there. A lot fishy.
And now that I think about it, everyone has their passionate times, but they seem to be doing it an awful lot at really bad times in small windows of opportunity.
Author's Response: I'm so glad this chapter could make you feel Buffy's loss. I debated about where to put the Giles/Dav chapter--who should have the last word on Angel's death. It seemed right to give the final say to Buffy. Willow went in Xander's mind and changed it manually. She magicked his brain so he would make a decision.

MAJOR points for the poetry bit. That's my Achilles heel, and Charles Baudelaire is one of the best, without a doubt.
Spike was very in character! A bit testy for obvious reasons but yielding at the end and helping Buffy out even though she didn't ask him to. Very heartfelt chapter all around!!

Yikes and more Yikes! I don't feel at all sorry for Maggie, who would. Wish, that Buffy & Spike could get some sort satisfaction but it's probably best this way. The question is who did, the government or the watchers. And how about Faith? Poor sad Faith.
Then of course there is Xander and Willow. That deserved an extra yikes! Those two have issues they need to resolve. A lot of issues. Xander's are pretty normal, he needs to grow up and not make stupid decisions. But Willow, she is starting to yield those powers over people rather easily. As usual, a great chapter.

It seemed to me that Buffy, Spike, Willow and xander were too cavalier. I mean Buffy and Spike just got out of a bad situation and it did not seem to have any effect on them. No surprise about Xander and Willow. Of course Willow would resort to magic to get what she wants. Interesting chapter.
Author's Response: You're right, they were cavalier. I thought going in as soon as possible would be something Buffy insisted on doing. She acts when things are bad, she doesn't wait. The lasting effect of the terrible situation they escaped will become clearer later. I would argue though, that their relationship itself was a bi-product of captivity. Bad Willow! Using magic to solve her problems. Guess she's one who has to learn the hard way that that only leads to badness....
Seems like Spike is making a relatively smooth transition to humanity. He and Buffy seem to be on easy terms about their relationship and relative strengths/weaknesses. Nice to se some good things happen for them.
And Maggie--she meets her fate. Her keepers are leaving no loose ends. But she was so evil, so conscience-less, one almost hoped her end was a bit more tortuous....
Looking forward to seeing more.

Oooh, what a cliffhanger!!! You're evil. What did Willow do to Xander?? Aah, I wish the next chapter was up already. Love this story! Also, a very good observation about Xander always wanting what he can't have. Very true. The banter between the characters was brilliant and a lot of fun to read as well, which just put cherry on top of the already yummy update sundae. :)

I really loved chapter 21. I felt like it elaborated on the innate difficulties of Dav having a relationship with Giles. The sex scene was hot and dark and dirty and the dialogue was perfect. I am really interested to see where you take us next.

I know two love scenes in one story from people who aren't Buffy or Spike is a bit unheard of, but I thought there needed to be a follow-up establishing the complexities of their relationship. Also, I kind of adore them and I think I'm giving them too much time, but since it's dirty, dirty sex, I figured most people would forgive me.
Author's Response: Finally, I wanted to give some weight to Angel's death and thought this scene went a long way in explaining it.

As with every couple on this show, Giles & Dav is extremely complicated, even more so. When it comes down to it, she is still a 19 something year old girl and he's a 40 something year old man and compounded by the supernatural world Giles lives in, they are miles apart. He knows what he wants but she's still figuring things out. Plus, super bad timing considering she JUST broke up with Xander. Maybe if he'd waited even a week. So this chapter was a dichotomy, at once sexy, but ultimately sad for me. If i compare it to Buffy & Spike making love when locked in a cage on a cot after being tortured and yet, that scene was so much more sweeter, and they were so connected. So in summary, I know that everyone is pro Giles/Dav, but I'm still not convinced, they just make me sad.
On a side note, I sure hope that Joyce didn't hear what was going on. Yikes! Completely addictive story, can't wait for the next chapter. :-)
Author's Response: Thanks so much for the comment! Though you're right, Rupert is much older than her, Dav is actually older than the Buffy and her friends. She's twenty-five and she's been engaged before, so she's someone who'd imagined herself married by now.
This scene was supposed to be sad and a bit dark, so you're not the only one to pick up on the darkness. Thanks so much for the comment!

I almost equate the killing of Angel with Giles' killing of the Dr./Glory .. but leaves you with ... now about Spike. Now that he is human maybe a different attitude.
But realizing that Giles and Watchers are not just observers and instructors for Slayers. Killings of demons no matter what changes they have made do not fall in the same category as killing humans.. Although Angel's killing does seem more like a vendetta.. for himself and Jenny.
Now wondering if Giles is the best pick for her.. especially with Giles keeping on his clothes like he was ashamed of something or that she was not good enough.

Author's Response: Thanks so much for the comment, hope the sexiness was okay. Glad you're conflicted about Giles' killing of Angel. I wanted to make that complicated, and Dav acts a bit like the audience in this scenario. She's appalled but ultimately sympathetic.
The Giles keeping his clothes on thing-I don't want to tell you how to feel about that, but when I wrote it, he kept his clothes on as a power thing. He'd just laid his feelings utterly bare and she didn't reciprocate. She didn't even promise not to reveal his secret. He tells her he loves her and she can't respond. He's also recounting torture, and the memorial of that is tainting the whole thing, too. He just doesn't want to feel powerless. Of course the ending is an acknowledgment that he is.

I'm w/ Joyce, I'm like "Are you sure you don't want one more day of rest?". But then again, I'm not a slayer. Buffy and Spike are just so sweet together. I love how she was the one who was disappointed that Spike didn't utilize the clotted cream!
Too bad Xander and Dav's talk was interrupted, they really could use an honest conversation. Dav is definitely caught in a tight, uncomfortable situation. Maybe she should just lay low for awhile. Definitely tricky.
Can't wait until the next chapter! This story is so nerve-wracking. Maggie is so so scary.

The dynamics between all the characters are fun to watch. Sometimes it's difficult to write scenes with that many characters in them, but you wrote is SO well. Awesome with zero confusion as to who's saying/doing what. Also, great and very appropriate reference to Dr. Mengele. Can't wait to read more!! :)
