Buffy had been married to Riley, who died while overseas and they had a baby together who she calls RJ. Dawn lives with her and Joyce has recently died.
Spike is in a band, but his whole outlook of the world changes once he meets her. I also seem to recall him giving her his coat to wear, and she had to call to have someone get it. Oz is a bandmate and his best friend.
They meet at a gas station where she accidentally hits him with the door to the freezer.
