while in the Summer's basement, due to Willow chanting a spell of some sort not realizing what was going to happen. They end up in another dimension where the sun doesn't hurt Spike and the people there don't know what vampires are. Before getting to the town they stay in one spot hoping the portal will reopen and after a few days when it doesn't they set out. I don't remember if Buffy kept her slayer strength or not, but since Spike was still a vamp I think she did. They find a mage who tells them it's impossible to open the portal for another 85 years, or something along those lines. Buffy naturally is pissed and lashes out but gets over it, falls in love with him and they start their own little family. The story takes the reader through portions of the years they spent together, before ending with Spike going through the portal 85 years later with his grandaughter and ending up in the basement again. Time moved differently so it was only a matter of days /months to the Scoobies. Everyone jumps on Spike accusing him of killing Buffy, luring her away etc. After he calms down he relates what happened to them over the last 85 years ending with Buffy's death from old age. And that's all I remember cause i can't for the life of me remember if it was finished or not.
