I've read this fic before. I searched the forum and couldn't find it.

So Spike is traveling and finds Tara in a cemetery. He agrees to take her with him if she does a spell to make Dru love him again. Instead they become best friends. Eventually Tara wants to go to college and she's found the Gem of Amara. So they go to Sunnydale. Willow befriends them as does Xander. Buffy is a bit of a bitch to him for a while before she becomes his friend too. At some point I remember Spike being nailed to a cross and he doesn't dust. Instead the cross explodes and Spike is standing in the sunlight not burning.

After Drusilla breaks his heart, Spike finds a witch he hopes can solve all his problems with a love spell, sound familiar? Spike never makes it all the way to California, though. And he meets someone along the way with more problems than he has.

All the chapters are accessible from either the chapter list or the 'next' link in the chapter before, but it is a bit hit and miss which if I remember right.
