Buffy and Spike together in LA

I remember bits and pieces. It's post season 2. Buffy and Spike left Sunnyvale together, I think. I'm pretty sure Buffy was in rough shape for a bit. They stay in a motel in LA for a good while, there is a tree that has some significance. They do return to Sunnydale. When they go back to LA the motel has been/is being torn down. Like I said, bits and pieces, any help would be appreciated.
