I hardly remember anything else about the fic but this line. It stuck with me because it was so unique. I believe that Giles was present in this scene and probably Buffy, maybe the rest of the Scoobies too. There is a pot of tea on the table and Spike asks "Shall I be mother?", meaning "Shall I pour the tea?"

Does it ring a bell?
