This fiction is either Post-Chosen or Post-NFA. Spike comes back to the Scoobies (in London I think). They inform Spike that if Dawn was fully from Buffy she would look exactly like her. But she doesn't, so Willow had performed a DNA test on Dawn to figure out who her father is. It turned out to be Spike. They got his DNA from his lighter which they had manage to keep from the Hellmouth. Does this rattle anyone's memory as to the title & author of the story?

The only story I know that has Dawn made from Buffy and Spike is the Origins Series by Niamh.

Thanks for responding, but no that's not it since that takes place in Sunnydale, and if I remember correctly Dawn figures it out from reading the monk journals. A great series, but not the story I'm trying to remember.

Thanks for responding. I started scanning the beginning of the story (I think I did read this one awhile ago), but it's quite long. Do you recall what chapter contains a reference of Willow testing to see that Spike is Dawn's 'father'?

I see that it takes place during S6, not post-Chosen, and Spike headed to LA & Angel's place, not England. And it mentions Spike being the Protector of the Key, which could imply Dawn being made partially by him.

If you could help to pinpoint the reference I'm trying to find that would be great. I'm just in the middle of reading another long fiction and I'd like to be able to close out this query sooner than later. Although I do think I'm going to reread 'No Such Things...' because it brings a smile to my face (the AI team listening to Spike's phone conversations w/ Dawn, Tara & Giles is such a hoot). It's just going to take awhile to get to.

I did finally read through No Such Things As Coincidences by All4Spike and its 4 sequels. Turns out I hadn't read it all. Unfortunately, not the story I'm looking for. It is a really good epic storyline.

Thanks for replying. I guess this might be the fiction, but I could have sworn the item used for the test was specifically stated as the Zippo lighter, and they were telling Spike who came to join them in London post series (not Buffy telling Dawn in S6). Hmmmm.

The only suggestion I have is to try the LJ Community Seeking Spike. If you don't have an LJ, you can probably get someone to ask for you. I wouldn't mind doing it if you don't have someone else. It's not entirely a rare trope - Dawn made from Buffy and Spike, so there are probably a lot of possibilities. I suck at remembering titles and authors, so can't be much help except to say I think I may have read one like that, but don't recall where or when.

The perfect story for this criteria would definitely be Kari Mouke's Normal. I thought I could find a link for that, but I do have a zip folder of her stories. PM me and I will send it as soon as I can.
