There's a post-NFA fic where Spike gets shanshu'd and living (on Angel's dime) in a big city (either Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, but not NYC as I would have remembered that being from there). He lives in a modern high rise with a large female dog. It turns out Buffy and Dawn live in the same city, and one of them runs into him. He's not happy to see her nor find out both sisters are in the same town. The one tells her sister, and they both decide to tail Spike at clubs and his walks home, then try to become friends with him again (remember a scene where they pin him to a diner's booth and chat like everything is just fine). Unfortunately there has to be angst; Buffy and Dawn are in a car accident, leaving both mortally wounded. Angel and Spike use W&H resources to try to save them.
