I have been looking for this fic forever so if you could help that would be awesome. Spike comes back to sunnydale with dawn who isnt buffys sister he is her protector but then gets caught by the Initiative and dawn goes to buffy for help. Sorry but that is the most I remember.

Is this A New Dawn by Mefiant? It's listed as unfinished but the first chapter reads a lot like what you described.
