Trying to locate this story. I don't think it's the Anne Rose Lost in Cyberspace one. Unless I'm misremembering.

I don't know how it happens, but the Scoobies get connected to our world via the net. The only part I really remember well is that Buffy was able to look at Spike's past through clips.

I know that this happens in Cyberspace...I think?

But the one I remember reading has Buffy being able to see William turn his mother and then having to stake her. I am 100% sure that part happened.

EDIT: Sorry. I jumped the gun because the title was familiar. I skimmed through it, but it wasn't it. I didn't see Buffy learning about William turning his mother and then having to kill her.

I think that Buffy was looking at the clip on a laptop and she had earphones on. Sort of like the scene in Lost in Cyberspace. But I definitely remember that she learned about William through the video clips...

EDIT 2: I'm starting to think that maybe it IS Lost in Cyberspace, and I'm probably remembering things wrong. Especially since I re-read the part where Buffy is learning about his past. It's very familiar. I just could have sworn that she saw him turn his mother and then kill her...

I have no idea what story I could be mixing up with Lost in Cyberspace now.
