So I know there are probably a ton of stories like this out there but the one I'm thinking of has Spike getting his chip out by accident, possibly as the result of a spell, not sure. He keeps it from Buffy and the gang and then they find out as a result of a battle in which Spike accidentally hurts someone to keep them safe. Possibly Buffy or Dawn. Ringing any bells?
