It's as if Angelus's 'lesson' has set Spike adrift in a sea of bloody recklessness: he's become an almost swirling dervish of murder and mayhem and brutal fun. This, of course, incenses his grandsire as the Aurelius quartet are unable to remain amongst their potential victims as Spike's antics push the existence of their kind and, moreover, their close proximity into a very vengeful public interest. A joy and a spur for Spike; an unnecessary spotlight and unwelcome vulnerability for Angelus. They flee. Yes, the fierce, immortal demons of the night have to escape London, and settle in Yorkshire. Only, Spike's first action there is to obliterate the clientele of the local pub - and those who escape raise the alarm. Hence, another angry mob.

Spike is now pushing everything to the limit. With hysterical laughter to boot. Like a hyper child, beyond all reason.

William has been tethered; Spike is now unleashed.

Great chapter.

Author's Response: Beautifully put, Sue. Would you like to become my summary writer, because you have a knack for it. :) Really, it's so nice to hear that you enjoyed the chapter and, more importantly, that you got what I was trying to convey. I love knowing that the points I'm hoping to make with my writing have come across to my readers. Thank you for taking the time to let me know. :)

I really love that last line for some reason.

Hmm, anyway to the actual review --> I'm not sure just how many times I can say I love this fic, but there I go again so...yeah. Writing is as usual superb and so so so superior to 99% of fics that I've read, and even then its on par with the other 1% of writing that I find amazing. Gah, it's just too good. I really hope to see more soon!

Author's Response: Wow, squawks, flattery will get you *everywhere*. :P Seriously, though, your compliments have really made my day. Thanks for reading, and for taking the time to review!

This is so great to read and I still have a big grin on my face even after all the killing. Spike is now the proverbial thorn in Angelus' side and it would appear he is not going to be removed easily, if at all. I love the fact that this is so beautifully written I can see it playing out in front of meand if you want to write the next hundred years in full then I wlll be waiting to read it. A pleasure as always.

Author's Response: Thank you so much, Sam. For my work to be called "beautifully written" really makes me feel good. I appreciate your taking the time to tell me that, and I'm glad you like the story. :)

You rock girl! I wonder if they will hide out in a mine as in the original?

Author's Response: Thanks, Mag rose. :D The mineshaft will be making its appearance soon, although the interaction between characters will be somewhat different than what it was on the show. I hope you enjoy that scene when it comes. ;)

YAY! I understand that we have to go through the turning of William into Spike, but I can't help fantasizing about what happens when we see Buffy again. Anyhow, you do credit to a backstory that Joss never revealed, and I think it's awesome. Your writing is wonderful, and your smooth evolution of characters is perfect. Waiting for more.

CT.

Author's Response: I completely understand wanting to see Spike/Buffy interaction. I'm wanting to see it, too, and I'm the author. lol. But you're right, this part is necessary, and I'm glad you're finding it enjoyable even without Buffy's presence. Thanks for taking the time to review and let me know. :)

Yey! An update, written beautifully as usual. I really enjoyed William's transformation into the working-class Spike; you handled it very well. I wonder how long it will take him to realise that, despite what he appears to be wishing, William is still a part of him.

Even though this story about Spike has no tender moments with Buffy but instead full of violence and hatred, nevetheless im very captivated! It is because it is so graphically well written in detail and every emotion is so real i could see it so clearly in my eyes and i could feel it so strongly in my veins.

Very very good!! Please give us more!

I love the irony of the way Spike torments Angelus with a bitter teaspoon of rebellion. Angelus who plans, schemes and stalks his victims and is used to being feared and obeyed. He broke Drusilla and in a way I think that by turning William she is inadvertently paying Angelus back for the crimes he commited against her. She cultivated a man who had so much potential to be her dark knight to be the strength that she never possessed to throw in the face of her daddy. She is a naughty child and has delivered a challenge to Angelus that may break him instead. Love the characterizations which we barely saw a glimpse of in the TV show. Looking forward to more chapters.

I almost feel sorry for Angelus. (Giggles) He really created a monster.... He, he.
Spike is such a rebel teenager... And itīs understandable that he doesnīt want to be William any more.
Donīt get me wrong. I love William, and I understand very well why Buffy was so in love with him. But try to see it through Spikeīs eyes: William was a looser, who didnīt have any real friends, who was bullied by his peers if not ignored and who couldnīt even protect the women he loved. Not Elisabeth nor his mother. He couldnīt even protect himself as a fledging from Angelusīs "lesson"... So what better than to create a new "persona" who is the total opposite to William. Who isnīt afraid of anything, damn the consequences?
All this is what I get out of reading your story so I hope Iīm not to far away from your view of William/Spike.
I canīt say it enough. This is really the best portrait of Spike I have read. Canīt wait to see what happens next.
I Angelus going to tell him about the Slayer?

Author's Response: lol. Angelus certainly has his hands full now, doesn't he? I agree with you completely on Spike's reasons for trying to suppress his "William" side. Although we know he will never be able to completely destroy that vulnerable part of himself, he is learning to hide it, to give a coat of armor. If he didn't do this, he would never have been able to recover from the events of the last chapter. I'm glad you like the story and I'm very flattered that you think it's so good. Thank you for the review. :)

Very powerful chapter where William sheds more of his humanity and learns a painful lesson in the pecking order of his new family. His desire for attention from the human world to be feared and discussed publically contrasts to the unimportant status within his own vampire family. The more things change, the more they stay the same as he trades human bullies and snobs for vampire ones. In your writing we are seeing the birth of Spike as he breaks out of the shell of timid and victimized William to someone who will now fight back. Win or lose, his determination to discover his inner strengths. to persevere, to exist past his hurdles thrown his way are what make him the master vampire that ultimately will cross paths with his third slayer.

I love the way your write and I am enjoying this story.

great update!
the behavior of spike is the one of an rebellious adolescent!!!! rebellion is against the paternal figure of angelus, clear that also there is resentment by the rape, and a bite of competicon by dominion i guess, the demostio of which his demon is not but small who the one of angelus
in the original Cannon, drusilla never shows a sincere interest in spike, daddy always the frist interest by her, this it is a change that I don't know where it can finish, william this beginning to have deep feelings by her, in my previous commentary, it mentions that this impossible for me, because unlike william of the original Cannon, this william experiment the true love, to the light of this, its relation with durusilla is single sad reflection of which it is the true love
it is this sense of lost what it makes take refuge in this false relation with dursilla?
or it is desire to experience the love again what it makes really fall in love with drusilla?
in truth drusilla loves william? because in the original Cannon, never it gets to happen...
too many questions, I hope that they clarify following undates!!!
great story! i love each detail

Author's Response: I'm so glad you like it, anabel. Thank you for taking the time to review. :) You're right; Spike is very much a rebellious teenager in this. William was a man weighed down by responsibilities (business, home, mother, morals, etc). Spike, as a vampire, is freed of those burdens. He frees himself, even more, by refusing Angelus' domination of him. The rape was brutal, but Spike was able to see it for what it was and move on from there. He will not be bullied any longer. Each step on his journey is taking him just a little farther from the William he was ... and a little bit closer to the William (or Spike) he will become. After all, it is bringing him closer to Buffy.

"However, for a moment, Angelus just gaped at the approaching mob. When his eyes shifted back to Spike, they were filled with disbelief.

“Goddamn it, William,” he said."--That face, I can see that face on Angelus, and can't help but laugh. He is truly the disapproving father that can't help but bail out his troubled, irresponsible son. So terribly the Spike that we always imagined, wreaking havoc and what not, simply because it makes things a challenge... and is a bloody good time! You've captured him so very well. I love watching him develop this persona. I look forward for the next installment, and the eventual reunion with his Elizabeth. A marvelous chapter in a magnificent story.

Author's Response: My inspiration for pretty much this entire chapter was the two minute mineshaft scene in "Fool for Love." I absolutely adored Spike's rebellious teenager vibe when he argued with Angelus. The two of them had wonderful chemistry together, very love/hate. And you're right, Angelus is very much the disapproving father in my story. Rocky times ahead for these two, I'm sure. Thanks for the review. :)

It's wrong that I'm charmed by cheerful mass murdering Spike, isn't it. Yup.

But I do admire how you're navigating the continuity/discontinuity between his human and vampire selves.

Author's Response: No, it isn't wrong at all. I first fell for Spike when I saw him in "School Hard," when he was still an evil killer. It isn't real life, so we're entitled to like him even when he's bad. ;) I'm glad you liked the chapter and thanks for reviewing. :)
