It's funny how they both fight to resist their first instinct in running to or comforting the other and then they both forget their fears and cant help but to cling to each other and want to fight for the love they once had.
I liked how Spike has a inner battle with himself just to even go to Buffy's door and also too how Dawn did in a small way try to shield Spike from Giles and want to spare him from hearing Buffy ran off to LA and then how when arguing with Spike how she repeats what Angel's version of how Spike was and is and Spike finally being able to defend himself and tell Buffy how things really were for him.
It was really nice to see a softness in Buffy and having her reach out to him and see he is still part of the man she grew to love. A little battle and torn and warn around the edges but still carrying William inside of himself.
I did break down a little when he pulled out the ring like he has carried it on himself everyday since his lose of her like after losing the book to Drusilla he never left this one remaining connection her had left of her out of his possession. That was simply perfection.
As always I love this story and as usual I am like the masses here and cannot wait till you write some more for me to read and sob over.
Author's Response: Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter and very happy that you mentioned being affected by the ring -- that is one of my favorite parts, too.

You can feel the pain and heartbreaking struggle both characters are going through and it is written out so well you feel like a fly on the wall in this story. I liked how Giles just completely dismissed Spike which is so true to Giles form on the show. Once getting past the initial insults slinging Spike and Buffy both slowly returned to their former selves as William and Elizabeth in their treatment of each other. I feel a great anticipation for the next coming page.
Author's Response: Thank you! I hope you enjoy the new chapter. :-D

Sooo sweet! Love the ending! All the struggle to suppress what she is really feeling is remarkably described in passionate detail. I hope Buffy now will open her heart to give Spike a chance.
Author's Response: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Beautiful and so so so perfect.
I thought Dawn was more in fear of Spike running into Giles then any acual fear of him. I'm so excited where this story is going.
A++++
Author's Response: You're right. Dawn was trying to spare Spike from having to hear that Buffy had gone to Angel. Naturally, Giles had to show up and ruin it all, lol. Thanks for the review!

Beautiful chapter. I loved every bit of the conversation between Buffy and Spike. I am so happy that for once Buffy did not run away. I can't wait to read the next chapter. I am sure that it won't be smooth sailing but this is a beautiful start.
Author's Response: I very much appreciate your taking the time to review. It's wonderful to know that you're enjoying the story -- I hope you continue to. Thank you so much. :-D

A stupendous chapter. He and she, full throttle, verbal violence of the magnificent kind - and it is only now, like this, that they get to each other, hold on to what they want, from each other. Buffy almost capitulates at the end; she becomes calmer, tender and almost resolved: this is what I want. Spike. It is almost disconerting, waiting for the real, mixed-up fist-happy girl to waver with her speech, deny her emotions .... but she stands there and pets him, loves him, becomes the girl of his dreams and looks directly at him. It's a pivotal moment, all the more so for its unexpectedness. For we, like Spike, expect her to run.
She stays. And it is this new, uncharacteristic resolution of hers that is going to make waves amongst the Scoobies, Giles and, of course, Angel.
He sees Elizabeth in Buffy. She now sees William in Spike but, crucially, it is now not a condition of love, for her. She loves Spike before her, with the tremor of William within. It just remains to be seen whether she will defend him now against his detractors as she defended him from the scorn of others, back then.
A very powerful and intense dialogue. Bravol
Author's Response: Thank you so much! I've had so many readers express shock over the ending of the chapter due to the violent argument that preceded their reconciliation. I think it was necessary for them to work through their frustration and confusion. I don't believe they could have come together if they hadn't first come to terms with their anger at each other. That isn't to say that it will all be easygoing from here, but, as you said, Buffy is now able to see William in Spike. That is the crucial first step.

Ok coming out of lurking now - I just have to tell you that this is the most beautiful story I have ever read. This chapter is so intense - with all their history and confused (or in Spike's case not so confused) feelings. going back now to read this chapter again.
Thank you so much for sharing this story with us!!
Skylar
Author's Response: How lovely of you to say! I'm so glad to bring you out of lurking and incredibly flattered that you think so highly of my story. Thank you!

What a glorious, gorgeous chapter. My mind is whirling. Spike being dismissed so effectively by Giles sent him down the drunken, self pitying path. When Buffy, full of Angel's words, finally arrived, Spike's vitriolic verbal assault was horrible. I was sure Buffy would just throw a punch and decide she had been right all along, there was no way William was anywhere to be found.
Instead, you believably turned all the pain and anguish on its head. You finally get them to talk about what happened in the past, how devastated they both were and are. Spike's presentation of the ring was beautifully realized, and Buffy finally reaching for Spike felt right and believable. This exchange seemed to have them turn the corner completely: "You don’t know how to be good; you’ve forgotten how to be good. You don’t even know wrong from right—”
She started to turn away then, but he grabbed her arm and held her back.
“Then, teach me!” he said hoarsely. Desperately." You masterfully have them both sympathetic and vulnerable and hopeful, and you had me holding my breath right up to the last line.
I'm rubbing my hands together in anticipation of Buffy having a little talk with her minions. Thank you for another stellar chapter in this compelling story.
Author's Response: The "teach me" line was my favorite in this chapter, and I'm delighted it struck a chord with you. Your reviews are always so wonderful and detailed, and they make it obvious that you are a very intelligent person, which makes your positive comments all the more flattering. Thank you! :-)

“You don’t understand,” he told her through gritted teeth, struggling to find a way to make her. “It wouldn’t have mattered.”
The whole conversation moved me beyond belief, and given the way it started, I just imagined and end where they were going to storm of and be miserable for a while well they waited for the others pride to wilt, but that moment. I'm still crying. It was just so poignant, and beautiful, and true, and she really believes him. And Spikes life so hard only because she wan't there. It wouldn't have mattered what Dre had done if she was there. Perhaps I'm a bit redundant, but the emotion portrayed was amazing and I'm simply moved. And I'm a bit proud of them, too. Always more hurdles to jump, but they know the truth and that is so very important. I truly love this story and eagerly await the next chapter. Now I'm going to go back and read it again. Thanks so much for sharing.
Merry Christmas :)
Author's Response: What a lovely and heartfelt review. I cannot tell you how much your compliments mean to me. I choked up several times writing that scene, and it tells me that I did well because you had the same reaction. I really hope I can continue to meet your expectations in the future and I promise to do my best. Thank you so much for taking the time to review!

Aww, they arn't going to hurt each other...though what will happen next? They forgive and forget, but have to put up with the Scoobies?
Author's Response: Well, you know Spike ... when he's hurt, he reaches for the bottle. Thanks for the review!

I just don't even know what to say other than....HOLY COW! Great chapter! I am so uber happy that they are finally together, atleast somewhat. I imagine there's a great deal of angst still left, what with the telling of Giles and the rest of the Scoobies. Can't wait until the next chapter. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, see you after the holidays!
Author's Response: Thank you so much! I'm sorry to be so late in responding to this, but I hope your holidays were lovely and happy. (((hugs)))

I loved loved loved this but I do have a question though.
When Buffy said I can't did she mean should cant accept the ring? Because then he repeated it back to her and I wasn't sure?
Author's Response: Sorry to be so late in answering this, but she meant that she couldn't be with him. Basically, she was trying to convince herself of that, which was why she then listed the reasons for it (he didn't know wrong from right, etc). He repeated it back to her because he was hurt and trying to digest the information. Thanks for the review!

At last Spike was able to tell Buffy some of his sides to events that had happened and his feelings behind then and it not being secondhand information from Angel or a William the Bloody book. This is the best fic every time I see a new part of this it just gets better and better to read.
Author's Response: How flattering to know that you feel that way. Thank you!

I loved this especially for the part where he hands her the ring and you can just feel the William anxiety he would have in having her open the box just as if it was 100 years ago and he was asking her then to marry him. And where you had him say it had to be the perfect ring I just teared up it was so perfect a moment in the story.
Author's Response: Thank you!
