I need some timing clarification please.... Is this visit to Winchester taking place the same autumn as Connor & Willow & Tara's wedding? I presume as much but just wanted to verify that we've hopped back in time a bit in William's chapters from where we last left Buffy, et al.

I'm also a bit confused as to how much autonomy Anne has. Clearly, she owned her own property as she was able to sell it to provide William's ransom, and she seemed free to accept the position in Shrewsbury at court, but the talk of her basically living at Harold's mercy threw me for a loop. I need a history lesson!

Author's Response: right, yes visit taking place the same autumn as the wedding. Anne would have very little autonomy. she would be able to sell her dowery lands etc as they were her's. but would have needed permission to live there. basically she was desperate when she accepted the position in Shrewsbury, she had also lived there before and could have argued that her early vows to Athelflaed superceeded her mothering duties, though not her wifely ones. if she'd stayed in Harold's hall she would have been totally at his, and therefore his wife's, mercy. a man had total control over the women he was responsable for as head of household in Saxon times. her only escape would have been a nunnery. and she can't do that now as she has no dowery

Oh, really not liking Dru or Darla. Here's hoping Anne may one day find her way to Buffy's hall permanently. Great chapter sweety.

Oh, poor Anne, what she's had to endure at the hands of those evil witches. I'm glad she kept the brooch hidden and that she realizes how bad Dru and Darla are and of course Buffy would be so very different to her. William keeps rising up in life, becoming worthier by the chapter. Loved it! Looking forward to more!

This new glimpse into William's life was great, I liked that Buffy's influence is always with him... nice choice of name for the horse by the way. :D William certainly is taking pride in his new sword... since it's from the spoils of this battle, I can't help but wonder if it's going to play into the story later on down the road. And I loved Athelflaed's idea to send William to Ingimund, this new position is all kinds of exciting. I look forward to finding out what new adventures await for him there. ;) Fantastic chapter!

…a dapple-grey stallion who answered to the unlikely name of Finn... I had to laugh out loud at this. I believe it’s the highest elevation any writer has ever given Riley, ROFL. Personally – I would have made him a gelding – inserts evil laugh here. YAY – glad to hear William has indeed come into his own as a warrior and a man, putting down the ‘dogs’ as it were and being able to ward off any potential wives. Me-thinks the queen’s idea will eventually bring William round to Buffy again – at least I hope so. I adored the chapter sweety, bravo on a job well done.

Gah, I just feel... sigh, poor Buffy, amidst all this happiness. I don't know how she does it and remain composed! I'd be bawling at the drop of a hat, making myself sick with want and worry. UGH, she is very strong indeed. And will Conner be up to preforming on the wedding night? Let's go have a look see!

OMG! William beat Liam! SWEET! And Anne loved the brooch, *sniff sniff* Oooo but William doesn't know. And that haunted look... sigh. It's good that Anne won't divulge any of William's secrets to the rest of the family... god only knows what those women would do with the info! Great update!
