Spike always did have a degree of humanity (we never did see Acathla touch him, did we?)but in the early canon he kept it well--hidden behind his bloodlust and violence and Dru-centred escapades. But it was there, nevertheless; he was never the cold, maniacal fiend of the Angelus school. Same family, yes, but a whole different class of undead. This, Angelus knew, as did Darla. The weakness of William. Bloody, yes, spike-capable, yes - but weak, most certainly. Their spiteful laughter at his expense was just like his 'friends' back in his human life. A vulnerability seized upon and reviled as a weakness, then and now.

But ultimately, this humanity is what let Spike in - with Buffy. A harsh journey in canon and a different, albeit more convoluted route in your story, without the prolonged rancour between slayer and vampire - but in both cases, they get beyond their roles and face each other as a man and a woman.

"His love for her had slowly eaten away at his monstrosity........." and that highly perceptive comment of yours encapsulates not only the Spike of Seasons 2 through to 7 but voila! it created everything that is Spuffy.

Uh Oh! I bet Buffy didn't plan on Spike finding out that way! She's in for a world of trouble! I can't wait to see Spike's reaction when he finds out it's his. Okay let me start by saying that I don't even know you and I love you. I love this story, and I love that you update often, that alone makes it really easy to stay into a story. Now I think that Spike is gonna know his bite, and think that she only loves him because of it. BUT she is gonna be able to convince him that she does love him, and it has nothing at all to do with the bite. I have total faith in you. I love the way you write your characthers, it really brings them to life.
