I'm glad too he hasn't forgotten Elizabeth, even dreamed of her. I wonder (but I'll read I guess) how the third part will be, if he'll recognize Elizabeth in Buffy when he sees her the first time. But Buffy from the past (the younger version of her) who didn't go back in the past, how can she knew him... and so on.
I know I should but I can't feel sorry for Archer. He deserved to be punished. Too bad for him it happened in this way.

Author's Response: It would take a lot more than vampirism and the passage of a few months to make him forget Elizabeth. And like I said, despite the darkness of this part, in remains a romance at heart. I'm glad you liked that scene. Thanks so much for reviewing. :)

The clinical nature of Archer's kill was chilling. William's amibivalence about Dru is an intriguing change from canon. His anger and sorrow over Elizabeth is nicely warped by his new nature, and I'm enjoying how she's coloring his experience as a vampire.

Author's Response: I'm glad you like it. Thank you. :)

This is my second review of this chapter, but I just had to review again.
I just read the whole story so far again. This time in a much slower pace. Enjoying everything of the first part of the story. Her reaction when she sees him for the first time, their falling in love, almost against her will in the beginning, her comparison between William and Spike was very funny at times, specially when she remembers Spike at the Bronze, telling her in his particular way "...I´ve always been bad"...

His passion, desperation about their love, as if he knew that such a happiness would not last, Their lovemaking the last days and her desperation when she was pulled back from the past.... His agony when he thought she was dead...
This second reading round made me "sniffle" cough, (cry) a couples of times.
The way your write them, with all their emotions... so strong, and specially with William. Just as I could have imagined him being, with the tenderness, the shyness, the constant struggle between what the Victorian society thought was right and wrong, the jealousy, the restrain in his passion for her, etc, etc.
When I read the second time how horrible Archer had been to both Elizabeth and William, I couldnt help but enjoy his slow death. I wouldn´t have minded hearing him begging for his life, though, but "sigh" without vocal cords... ;-)

Now I have a couple of questions.... that I don´t want to have answered, by the way, you know, because of the spoilers, but I can´t help but wonder...
¿Was there any particular reason why Buffy met Angelus and he found out she was a Slayer, and then she run and they "never" saw each other again ? Is Angelus going to talk about him fighting against a blond slayer in front of Spike, or...?
You know... just wondering...

And then there was their lovemaking the last days before she went back to the future... without protection... (the lovemaking I mean, he, he.) Could mean something, could mean nothing... I know, I know.. You are just driving me crazy with all the possibilities and the paradoxes that could happen, you know ?
But if you have me obsessing so much about a story, that makes you in my eyes my favorite writer right now, and I´m including professional writers in the lot.... And I love to read. having on my shelfs over a thousand books... So you do the math if you´re good or not. Can´t wait for the next chapter...

Author's Response: What a wonderful, well thought out review. Thank you! I love it when readers break down the chapters and tell me exactly why they enjoyed them...the parts that moved them and the parts that make them cringe. I'm so flattered that you are enjoying the story this much, and I hope you continue to in the future.

A bit evil, indeed, but poetic justice was practically asked for in this case. '“That,” he whispered to Archer, “can be arranged.”' Sometimes arrogance is not the appropriate response. Great chapter.

Totally LOVED this chapter! The writting is superb and I love the way you captured William's hatred for Archer. The torture was delightfully descriptive!

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked it, Serenity. :) A few readers seemed to have felt a little squeamish about the torture scene, and while I completely understand that, I felt that it was a scene that must be included. I'm glad you appreciated it. Thanks for the review. :)

"He had a penchant for killing blondes, now. Not because he was angry with her…but because they were not her."

That line gave me the chills, and it was so very fitting because as morbid as it was....it was also full of sadness. Much like the way this chapter was. I read it twice because it was so intense and perfect.

This was really beautifully written. If you ever wrote anything with original characters, I would love to read it. You have a real talent here and as always....you leave me wanting more.

Excellent work.

Author's Response: Thank you so much, Dee,. I'm glad you liked it. :) Despite the dreadful acts he is capable of, William is not without heart. I'm glad to hear that the killing of the blondes was understood the way I meant for it to be. Yes, it was evil of him, and morbid. Yet, it was also fueled by his intense sadness, his longing for a girl who no longer exists.

Absence will make the heart grow fonder and meanwhile he can work on becoming a stronger person er... monster person? He is struggling now to find his place and who he is now and i like reading this version of Spike and Buffy.

Author's Response: I'm glad you are enjoying it, thanks for taking the time to tell me so. Incidently, William's search for his identity and his place in the world will feature heavily into this part of the story. It's nice to know that you picked up on the significance of this; it shows that I'm doing my job as a writer. :)

A chapter of two, very different parts: the heartache and then - the horror.

William still craves his darling Elizabeth and he finds her, but only in his dreams. Such a poignant phrase:

"Hours where he was not evil, and she was not dead."

encapsulate his desire to sleep so that he may escape his unliving existance and find Elizabeth, and love and peace.

But awake, he is a demon. He still yearns for her, but he is able to kill young blonde girls ...... because they are not her. He is able to torture a former acquaintance who had insulted Buffy: he crucified him and kept him alive, suspended and in extreme pain for three days. He killed him with a railroad spike through his head.

So, William the bereft lover, William the acquiescent, demonic lover, William the vampire eagerly learning the bloody trade of his new life. How long before the darkness of his waking hours blots out the light that warms his sleep?

Intense chapter; great.

Author's Response: Thank you, sue. I appreciate the feedback. You're completely right about the duel nature of the chapter--and the character. It's a pleasure to read such a detailed, insightful review. :)

Having re-read this because I can't get enough, I was wondering which one of The Scourge of Europe knitted? It was just as fab the second time. Love love love this story.

Author's Response: None of them knit, sweetie. As mentioned in Chapter 29, they are living in a suite in the Royal Hotel that once belonged to a married couple (in the AtS episode Destiny, we learn that they are an abassador and his wife). The work basket would belong to the middle-aged -- and now very dead -- woman. :)

I started on this story over the weekend and finally got to this point today. This is a long saga but it goes by reading so fast because I found I just could not sign off line without reading just one more pageI keep reading this thinking you know Buffy got off so much easier then Spike cause she returns to her time with no time passing while Spike on the other hand has to live thru the next hundred or so years without her and it made me think of a Jane Austin quote in the book Persuasion

"All the privilege I claim for my own sex is that of loving longest, when existence or when hope is gone."

And this quote just came to mind to me today cause I thought of this when I was reading your story about your story of William here in that he will be the one who will have to love the longest when all hope is gone.

You really have done a outstanding job on this and I hope to see more of your writing soon cause I really want to see what happens with this.

Author's Response: I'm a Jane Austen fan myself, and I think the line you quoted was beautifully apt. :) I'm glad you like the story, and I really appreciate your taking the time to tell me so.

((((((“What’s gotten into you? Usually, you’re not all about the physical affection…that’s where I come in.”
“Can’t help it,” he breathed. “Can’t help—”
She tangled her fingers through his unruly hair; she pulled his mouth onto hers. Her kiss was deep and ravenous, but still so gentle, so full of love. He gasped into it, returned it with all the passion that was in him. He pleaded with her: “Touch me. Show me that you’re real…Show me…”))))))

I read this like 3 times cause it was just so beautifully put even if it was only a dream it was the only light part in his dark days. I still like holding on to his love for her.

At least he is finding some satisfaction in killing off old enemies I myself would have killed that guy for slandering Buffys memory I was surprised he hung on for 3 days and as long as he did not that people/characters should be tortured but he was so vile in what he said to Spike I do not thing anyone would blame him for doing what he did. She was his* maybe not in conventional terms of the times but body and soul Elizabeth was his just as much as he was hers I think he is entitled to a melt down.

Everytime I read another part of this I become more and more of a William and Elizabeth shipper and hold out until the day they meet again.

I also like how you show the things and faces of the things that shape him from Angelus tips on torture and developing his killing skills to the personalities of Darla and Dru its a well rounded mix in how you put it all together.

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked the dream. And you're so correct in saying that it's the only light spot in a dark existence. The fact that he was dreaming about being in the sunlight, in a meadow, surrounded by flowers (with Buffy, who is dressed in white) is very telling of his character and what he feels he has lost. He isn't sorry for his evil actions, but he is sorry that the direction his (un)life is taking isn't the one he longed for. Given the chance, he would leave that violent existence behind him and return to Elizabeth. Without Elizabeth, however, I think he prefers being evil and being able to take his frustrations out on others. Crucifixion was actually a slow death, because, unless the nails/spikes were placed in the wrong place and the victim bled out, (often ropes, instead of nails, were used to prevent this) the actual cause of death would be slow suffocation. In that position, a person's diaphragm in under tremendous strain, and it eventually buckles underneath that strain. Archer wouldn't have last much beyond four days, though. He was already having seizures. In a way, William was actually putting him out of his misery. Though, had he known that, he might have just left him hanging. :P Thanks, as always, for a wonderful and thought provoking review. :)

ok i want to apoligize for my last comment about william being disgustings, hes not, hes just changed and its just different. you are an amazing writer and i love how u make all of your characters so complex and just build them to be unique characters, especially william. youre a very talented writer, not a lot of people can do this as well as u do. i love this story and am so happy that u updated. im glad that william still loves buffy and that hes holding on to her memory. i really hope that spike doesnt lose william in his transformation and that he still has that loving side to him. also i hope that everything works out well and that buffy and spike/william end up together. please update as soon as u can, cant wait to read the next chapter. thanx

Author's Response: It's all right. I understand why a lot of people would be having such strong reactions to this part of the story, so the comment about William didn't really bother me. I know that some of it is hard to read, but, as I am telling about this part of his past, I'm going to have to make it true to character. And the truth is, he could be very violent and uncaring to those he did not know personally. I'm glad that you see this and aren't upset now. Thanks for the review. :) William will never stop caring about Elizabeth/Buffy even as his feelings for the rest of the Order changes. Even his metamorphasis into Spike will not make him forget her. Remember his protective, possessive, and very dogged passion for Dru in season two? Well, he's no less loving in this fic, it's only that now the object of his affection is no longer with him, so he finds himself struggling. It will get better for him, eventually.

Loving your fic

Author's Response: Well, a large part of Spike's inner spark came from his pleasure at killing off everyone...and his cockiness at being able to kill off everyone. :P But don't worry; William will find both his spark and his purpose very soon. Thanks for reviewing. :)
