Spike's so vulnerable and it seems Buffy and Angel have the instinct to go right for his soft underbelly. It makes me ache for him, but I hurt for Buffy, too. Dawn is a strong, bright force in this depressed little group. Her friendship helps ease the hurt a little.

This entire scene was fantastic, but this confrontation sang: "Rage washed over him at that, and it was followed by the demon.

“It’s you’re fault I’m like this; you drove me to it! You dishonest bitch. I was an idiot back then—a—a limp, sentimental fool—but you made me think you gave a damn. You made me fall in love with you. And then you just took off, left me for dead, left me for Dru. What was I supposed to do when she turned me? If you don’t like what I’ve become, you’ve only got to look into a mirror to find who to blame for it!”

Then, she did hit him. She backhanded him with enough force to knock him flat. “Don’t you dare put this on me! Don’t you dare! Whatever happened to William wasn’t his fault—it couldn’t have been—but he died. Drusilla killed him, and you took his leavings; you took his body and his memories. And you were a vampire—a disgusting, evil thing—a long time before I met him!”

Slowly, painfully, he climbed to his feet. There was blood on his face, and he tried to wipe his bleeding mouth with the back of his arm; but the leather of his coat merely spread it around. He opened his mouth to argue you with her, to curse her—to hurt her. However, what escaped from his lips was anything but what he had planned.

“I love you.” The rage and hurt and in voice dialogue made this entire scene sparkle. The detail of the blood being spread by the coat lent a vivid, grisly detail to Spike's assertion of love, casting Spike in stark contrast to William. Lovely.

Thank you for another emotional and entertaining chapter of this wonderful story.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I know a lot of readers are having a hard time getting through the confrontation between Spike and Buffy. Heck, even I would have preferred if it went differently. But I just cannot see things turning out in a positive manner when there is so much confusion between them. Anyway, the characters are pretty much writing the story for me at this point. It's great to hear they are doing a good job, lol. :-D

Dear Buffy,

Get over it. Just as you are the woman Buffy and the Slayer, so too is Spike William and a vampire. A being is a being, composed of many different facets that you can't separate.

In 1880, you got your chance (for the most part) to be a regular girl. Apocalypses were not on your agenda. William fell in love with you as you were, as a normal girl. Now you're the Slayer, a being designed to kill him, yet this does not deter his love. Why can't you offer Spike this same unconditional love?

Tell everyone else to blow off and only listen to Dawn. You'll be a lot happier. I promise.

I hate that she's being so stubbornly, willfully ignorant!!! And mean on top of it!!

I'd be up for Spike and Dawn running off and taking care of each other from then on. We know what Buffy's parenting skills are like, and Dawn's the only one who truly saw Spike and loved him like he should be.

She's just confused, and it's terribly hard for her to accept that her gentle Victorian lover is the same person who has tried so many times to kill her. Remember, this story began before the events of Intervention, so Spike never had a chance to prove himself to Buffy. Not yet, anyway. Thanks so much for the review. :-)
