Buffy went out of her room to look for Spike moments later. As much as she wanted to bask in the feeling of utter relaxation, she knew that she had to get out from the bathtub as soon as her body showed signs of pruning.

She had searched the entire house, including the backyard, but Spike was nowhere in sight. Getting back through the kitchen, she had already started to dial his home number when he noticed the piece of note he stuck on the fridge.

A tender look appeared on her face as she read it.

Dear Buffy,

Today is my mom’s 43rd birthday so I just went out quickly to visit her. Don’t worry. I won’t be gone very long. I’ll be back with Chinese for our lunch so that we won’t need to get out of the house.

I love you.

Yours,
Spike

*************
The day was cool and the sun was up high without a cloud in sight. The trees that overlooked the cemetery plots showed hints of green and little flowers. It was a good indication that Spring was indeed already here.

It was a scene Spike had grown familiar with for four years. He always made sure that he came to visit on every single one of her birthdays following her death.
He used to go there with so much bitterness surrounding him. He still missed her, but his heart however, didn’t quite feel as heavy as it did so many times before.

He missed her, yet unknowingly, hope flickered from his eyes as he carefully placed the flowers on Jenny’s grave.

“Happy birthday, Mom. You’re probably wondering why I came a tad bit late than I used to…No actually I take that back since you’re the one who used to ramble on about love and Buffy. You probably figured out that she and I will end up together sooner than I did.

“Well, the thing is I’ve finally told her the truth and the good thing is she seemed to love me back…” He went on. “I love her…but I’m not sure if she would still love me once she finds out what she’s getting herself into. She never knew the William who’s broken up inside… the man who blamed himself for losing you. He just went through so much that he’s not really sure if he still had a heart to give…”

*****************
Buffy went to the cemetery, determined to be Spike’s support if he needed her. As she came closer to Jenny’s grave, she caught a sight of Spike standing over his mom’s grave with his back facing her.

“…I love her, but I’m not sure if she would still love me once she finds out what she’s getting herself into. She never knew the William who’s broken up inside… the William who blamed himself for losing you. He just so much heart aches that he’s not really sure if he still had a heart to give…”

He sighed heavily. “I guess I’m just a bit clueless on how my life is going to turn out years from now, but one thing I do know for certain is that someday, I’m gonna ask her marry to marry me…And when that day comes I hope that she loves me enough to say yes.”

Buffy almost dropped the flowers that she was holding from the shock of hearing what he told Jenny. Oh.my.God! He’s gonna ask me to marry him.

“…I guess I’d better get going.” he said, his hand seemed to have come-up to wipe some tears from his eyes. “Don’t really want to keep my girl waiting. Once again, happy birthday mom…I’ll come visit you next month and I promise to bring her with me.”

Then as he turned, his surprise made him stumble to the ground when he saw that Buffy was standing right behind him. “Buffy.”

“I got bored so I thought I come and join you.” Buffy told him as nonchalant as she could. Her face was completely void of any emotion when she came to his side.

“Happy birthday, Jenny.” She murmured, placing the small bouquet of flowers beside the ones that he brought his mom.

“How long have you been standing there?” Spike asked nervously, scratching his head.

“Actually, I just got here.” She lied. “Why do you ask?”

Spike held back his sigh of relief. “Oh nothing… “

Buffy raised an eyebrow to show her curiosity over something that she already knows.

Spike placed an arm around her shoulders and kissed her forehead. “I’m just glad that you came.”

****************

Buffy didn’t think her feet had touched the ground as they walked side by side towards her house. She felt giddy. And who could actually blame her since it wasn’t everyday that you get to hear the man that you love speak of his intention to marry you. It’s definitely something that her heart and mind wasn’t going get over soon. It took all willpower that she could muster in order to keep the delirious smile from showing on her face. If she’s not careful, Spike could easily figure out that something’s up since he’d been looking at her face every once in a while with a funny look on his face.

The two had stopped by at the Chinese take out station before they finally head for home. It was past noon and both their tummies were already grumbling by the time they had reached the house. But as soon as they got there, it really didn’t came as a surprise at all when it became clear to them that eating lunch was going to be the furthest thing on their mind.

The minute they had closed the door behind them, Spike had immediately pulled her roughly towards him and began kissing her like a starved man.

Moaning softly, Buffy responded by putting her arms around him and inserting a hand into his shirt. She erratically drew secret patterns on his belly as their kiss became wild and passionate. From the way their hands were responding to each other’s kisses, they would’ve probably ended up doing it on the floor if it weren’t for the sudden ringing on the phone that had managed to pierce through Buffy’s fogged senses.

“I better get that,” she said between pants as she felt his hand go around his waist to insert inside the back of her jeans.

“No, leave it, luv. That’s probably just some telemarketer…” He said, his voice trailing as his hand finally found what they were looking for. She gave out a cry of delight when she felt him squeezed gently.

“Ah!” Buffy gasped. “What if it’s mom?”

“Then you’ll just have to return her call after we’re done.”

“But what if she called to say that she’s on her way here?”

Spike froze as he tried to consider her point through his dazed senses. “Right. But you better make it quick then.”

Buffy ran to answer the phone, leaving a very very frustrated Spike behind.

*****************

Few minutes later, Buffy came back with a smile on her face. “I was right, that was mom.”

“Oh. In that case, I’m guessing she’s not actually on her way here judging from the look of pure naughtinesss written all over your face,” he teased, pulling her towards him again.

“Better,” she said. “She’s not gonna be home till tomorrow afternoon. And since tomorrow’s actually the beginning of Spring break, I’m thinking we should head out to the beach with the gang. The weatherman said it’s gonna be nice and warm the entire week.”

“Are you sure you want to invite the gang?” he asked, pouting. “Coz’ I kinda like the idea of having you all to myself.” Oh yeah…private beach…under the…

… bright moonlight…Skinny- dipping.
Buffy could feel the heat crawling up her cheeks as a very wet and waiting Spike became more vivid inside her mind. “Then it’s just gonna be us then.”

Buffy gave him a quick peck on the lips before her body stiffened.

“What’s wrong?”

“I just remembered,” she looked up at him with worried eyes. “Riley.”

“What about him?” he asked in annoyed manner.

“He still doesn’t know.”

“You could call him and tell him it’s over?”

“Nah, I’ll just do that tomorrow,” she said thoughtfully. “I don’t wanna break up with him over the phone.”

Spike could not help feeling worried. “I don’t think I like the idea of you going to meet with him alone. I think I’ll just go with you just to make sure.”

“No, you don’t need to. I’ll just ask him to meet me some place private like a café.”

“But-“

“Spike. I’ve spent enough time with him to know that he’s going to do anything foolish. I mean he’s just Riley. So you shouldn’t worry.”

“I still think I should go with you,” he insisted.

Buffy threw him a look of disbelief. “My, my. Who knew that Spike Giles would turn out to be one of those overprotective boyfriends that he himself would usually warn me from?”

Spike smiled awkwardly while his face slightly flamed. “I’m not being overprotective, I’m just-“

“What?” Buffy asked when he saw his teasing grin.

“Did you just call me your boyfriend?”

“I…I… well you know. I thought that was already a given since…” Buffy looked away from the intensity of his gaze. “I could take it back if you’re not ready for us to…”

Spike grabbed her arm. “Who said I was complaining, luv. I guess it’s just a matter of getting used to the fact that you feel the same way about me.”

“Spike, how I could not love somebody like you?”

“You don’t know me Buffy…”

“Don’t be silly, Will-yum. I know you. We’ve been practically been best friends all our lives!”

“That’s not what I meant.” he swallowed hard. “William is not the knight in shining armor type that you’ve been dreaming about since you were a kid. If I was, you would’ve been mine years ago.”

“Well the important thing is that now you know that I am…”

“You are what, pet?”

“Yours.” She whispered coyly.
