Intriguing start, but the huge chunks of text do make it a bit hard to read. Might be a good idea to break up into more paragraphs. I'm guessing the 'precious cargo' is a baby? Looking forward to the revelation that Spike is back!

okay, i see this is your first fiction, so i'm not being mean, just a word of advice, i would break up the huge paragraphs, it would make it a lot easier to read, i would also suggest getting a beta.
