This chapter had me tied up in knots, though I laughed at Anya telling Willow to just move out. Willow defending her right to stay at Revello because of all the rent she pays, and then catching herself. Well, there's that twenty bucks she probably hasn't noticed is missing.

Spike's edginess and agitation are wearing, but only on him, it seems. Buffy's trust is misplaced, and when she discovers the source of her money, she's going to be devastated. I don't know what Dawn can do to keep either or both of them from being hurt in this, but she is "smart as hell," so I hold out hope that she comes up with some plan before Riley makes the scene.

Spike's lack of a conscience is becoming glaringly apparent, and Giles' interest in Buffy's windfall also bodes ill. There's trouble around the corner, and I just want to cover my eyes.

Thanks for another emotional, entertaining chapter.

Author's Response: Poor Spike is doing the best he can given the circumstances, but you're right. He doesn't have a conscience and it's becoming more apparent. To him, doing the right thing is doing anything to help the people he loves. And "anything" includes things that are morally ambiguous -- or even downright immoral. To him, the ends justify the means, and that is the mindset that is heading him toward freefall. Thanks so much for the review. :)

You know I love how you added the eggs to this. And deep down I kinda suspected but then I also thought it might be this ridiculously mundane job that he would be embarassed to have. But more so than in the actual episode featuring the eggs, you use it to draw in a fuller characterization of spike that is so much truer to the Spike we know than the one they formed in season six... cuz I mean honestly. But great writing! ...long but all good things take a while right? This is a perfect analysis of spike, the good intentions mixed with single-minded obsession and the apathy towards anyone he doesn't know and personally care about. It's like a child, selfish willful, but good intentioned in their black and white view of the world. It is so....utterly.. SPIKE!

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked the addition of the eggs. I've gotten some negative feedback about that because a lot of readers are afraid I'm going to rehash "As You Were," which isn't remotely the case. Thanks so much for the review. :-D

Ok I've spent the last three days reading this in every free minute I could manage. I love it!! I loved the early interaction between William and Buffy and really enjoyed Part II, it definetly helped me understand your Spike better. Part III is great so far, but I can't help but be worried about what going to happen with those eggs! I hope there's another chapter soon, cos I'll be checking.

Author's Response: I'm so happy you enjoyed Part II. I got some very mixed reviews (and a mass exodus of readers) during those chapters. Thanks so much for taking the time to review and let me know! :)

Spike is so edgy and quietly frantic - you've really portrayed that so well in his POV narrative - that this whole chapter has a sense of forboding. Frankly, I can't understand Buffy missing all the clues; I know she was never intuitive with a capital I but nevertheless, she is seemingly distracted by this new togetherness which, in a weird way, keeps her at a safe distance from her disapproving pals and Watcher. For me, in his unswerving efforts to please her, Spike is acting too much like William, only William with a psychotic edge. His constant worry and inner assessments are in fact quite draining, especially when Buffy's discovering the truth - AND SHE WILL - is going to be ......... awful. I want them together, him there, Dawn onside, the Dynamic Duo that is Buffy and Spike ..... but not like this. It feels brittle at the moment. Can't help it, but I'm waiting for the SNAP!

Really effective in-depth chapter. Thanks!

Author's Response: Edgy and frantic sums it up well. Poor Spike. You're completely right when you say he is acting like William with a psychotic edge, and I think Buffy's behavior toward him is only exacerbating the problem. The more obsessive he behaves toward her, the more positive feedback she gives him. I don't think it is at all intentional on her part, but it certainly isn't helping matters any. There is also a reason she is not noticing the signs that something is wrong with him ... but that's all I can say about that. Thanks so much for the review. :)

Oh but Spike kills me-what a beautiful mix of good and bad. He is almost like a child-completely lacking in moral judgment and thus able to do so much bad even while intending to do good. I could cry.

As always, thanks for the wonderful update.

Author's Response: I love your comparison between Spike and a child ... that is just how I see him too. Thank you for the review!

Yes, Spike is a loaded gun with only Buffy for his moral guidance. It's so bittersweet to see his devotion and know that he's trying to help her, but that the effort damns him also. Phenomenal writing even in the midst of this prospective heartbreak.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! :-)

OMG! I believe Spike is headed to another major heartache! Please dont make this just like what happened to BTVS the series where Buffy broke up with Spike after learning about his involvement with the eggs! Spike will be devastated! Oh no not again!

Author's Response: Well, I can't tell you where the plot is going - it might be bad or good - but I promise it won't be a rehash of "As You Were." I really dislike that episode. Thanks so much for the review! :)

It is really interesting how you write Spike. You have to love him because he feels things so intensely but I also feel like hitting him because he is so stupid. Sometimes the ends don't justify the means. I just hope it doesn't turn out as badly for Spike as it did on the show. Buffy can be so self righteous. I just hope she remembers tht Spike is still learning. I just know the Riley is the evildoer behind this stupid scheme.

Author's Response: I can understand why you feel that his actions are stupid, but I sincerely hope you don't think he is lacking in intelligence. Right now he's just desperate to the point of being unthinking. Because he doesn't have a conscience, it makes it harder for him to distinguish wrong from right. He knows it is wrong because Buffy wouldn't approve, but he also believes it's right because he is helping the people he loves. I agree that the ends definitely don't justify the means, but to poor Spike ... they do. Thanks so much for the review. :)

*nods* at last Willow said it out loud, not paying rent... so maybe they'll move out soon.
Even for a vamp and a slayer it's not easy getting used to living together. They struggle like any other paring may do.
*sigh* So money comes in but Spike is changing. I'm glad that Buffy at last noticed that he lost weight. But Spike gets himself deeper and deeper in, he'll be in big trouble if Buffy finds out. I fear Dawn is right guessing what may happen when she finds out.

Author's Response: I'm woefully late, but I just wanted to say thank you for leaving a review. :)

Oh MY GOD!!!

Can't think of a think to say, loved it and will be biting my nails till Giles and unavoidably Buffy find out... OH MY GOD!!!

You killed me, you know!
*hugs*

Author's Response: Don't die yet! We haven't reached the end! lol. Seriously, I can't tell you how glad I am that you had this reaction. I've been building the tension for a while and I wanted this chapter to come as a relative surprise to my readers. ((hugs)) Thanks so much for the review!

Amazing chapter but very dark, I feel so bad for everyone in it because I can see the explosion coming.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I tried very hard to make this a very tense chapter, one that will leave my readers on edge to find out more. I hope that I succeeded. :)

That was absolutely brilliant. This isn't going to make much sense because I'm late but had to say my bit. Willow needs a good kick up the arse and there is no way that Giles believes Hank is sending the money. What is the significance of the trees dying where he lived in England? I really thought that Spike would be fighting other demons in some sort of fight club thing but that is so not the case. At least I suppose Spike's keeping the eggs cold this time!! Poor Spike he's keeping them all afloat in a very bad way but the only way that he can and I think he realises that it could all go tits up. If he didn't he'd tell Buffy. Lets hope when she finds out Buffy can at least understand that his intentions were good and with her well being in mind. Loved it as ever.

Author's Response: I think your review makes perfect sense, and I enjoyed reading it. :) It's interesting that a lot of readers assumed Spike was in a fight club. I'm guessing maybe it was the use of the word "fisticuffs" in chapter 58? At least that means you guys didn't see this coming. I was hoping to be able to surprise everyone. In the Victorian language of flowers, the flowering almond represents hope, which is what made the tree so significant in this chapter. Also, it explains Spike's comment to Buffy (They all died, naturally.) I hope that answers your question. Thank you so much for the review!

This is bad. This is very bad. I wish he would stop but he's helping the only way he knows how. What's he gonna do if something goes wrong and they attack Buffy? Is this gonna end badly? I hope not but it seems it might. Poor Spuffy.

Author's Response: I'm so happy you see it that way. He has only the best intentions, but Spike (even canon Spike) tends to go through life with blinders on. As long as he's doing the right thing by helping Buffy, he doesn't consider that he might be doing the wrong thing in his method of helping her. Thanks so much for the review!

Poor misquided vamp. Not that I could see him with a nine to five, but still. The shit and the fan will meet sometime. And I doubt that Giles thinks Mr. Summers has suddenly become an upstanding citizen. Curious about what's to come, please update soon!

Ah, the eggs... and not a fight club..

And Giles knows a little too much about the money.. and will surely contact Hank... and there goes their happy home..

Author's Response: It was interesting to me that many readers assumed Spike was in a fight club. I believe it was his use of the word "fisticuffs" in chapter 58. At any rate, it kept most readers off the trail of the eggs, which works for me. Thanks so much for the review. :)
