this was a beautifully written chapter. It is really nice to read a story where Buffy is not calling Spike a soulless demon. Buffy knows all of the horrid things Spike has done but is able to see past that and see the man that Spike is. Well done.
Author's Response: I'm so glad you liked it, and thank you for the review! Since Buffy is not the slayer in this story, I tried to write her as I could see her acting/feeling under the circumstances of this story. Spike has never hurt her or tried to kill her, and she had never come across a vampire before meeting him (Darla not included). Not being the slayer, being older, not having been trained to kill them in order to survive, and not being hurt by them personally, AND being mated to one, all makes Buffy more able to think in shades of gray, rather than black and white, without feeling guilty about it. I love writing Buffy as a normal human, or just someone other than the slayer, because I believe it allows her character to be more able to understand a vampire, or accepting one who doesn't fit the mold, because she has not experienced their evil firsthand. :) Thank you so much for reading, I'm very happy you liked this chapter!

Wow, I have just picked this up yesterday and read it right through Chapters 1 to 10. An awesome fic - great original premise, super characterizations and of course truckloads of UST. Some nice little twists here, non Slayery Buffy (although I was convinced for the first 3 chapters that Willow had hit at least her, if not Spike as well with the old Lethe's bramble), friendly, well slightly less bitchy Darla, adding the Xander/Dawn relationship simultaneously with retaining Willow/Oz. And did I mention the UST. Anyway thanks Linnae, I shall read and review regularly from now on.

I really like this story. I liked their conversation in this chapter, Spike is really being patient and Buffy although on the verge of hysteria seems to be somewhat accepting. I hope that the next step is that Spike moves in because the separation pains will get worse. Also what about the dinner party is that when the rubber meets the road?

I really enjoyed the chapter. I wonder if the mystery guests are Angel and Drusilla. I really hope not but every story needs a protagonist. Now that Buffy has an understanding about vampires and mates I am anxious to read her next encounter with Spike. Somehow I think this dinner will be a turning point.

At first I was thinking reality was altered in some way. By the end that is still a possibility, but I am not so sure that's what it is anymore.
